Home Page > Home and Family > Parenting > Protect your valuables with an in-floor safe: here?s how
Posted: Sep 26, 2011 |Comments: 0 |
If you want to store valuables at home, a safe is the best protection. Even if you have a good home security system, a safe gives you an extra layer of security. You may be able to replace material items in your home that were lost to theft if you have a homeowner?s insurance policy, but some items can cost you more than money. Important documents are prone to a number of disasters?fire, flood, moisture damage and theft.
To protect your identity and your financial records, you may want to look into installing an in-floor safe. These safes are designed to be permanent parts of your home, so no burglar can remove them. The only way to get in is to know the combination, which provides better security than an unsecured safe. What you don?t want to do is buy a free-standing safe, which the burglars could simply move out of your house to open on their own time.
Benefits of a Floor Safe: Wall safes are generally more popular among people looking to hide their valuables, mostly due to their fairly straightforward installation. But since floor safes are less common, they provide improved protection. Veteran burglars may know where to find even cleverly-hidden wall safes, but they are less likely to check out your floors.
Installing Your In-Floor Safe
Step 1: Choose Your Safe. Make sure you purchase a safe that has a good security rating and is both fire- and flood-resistant.
Step 2: Choose Your Location. Most people install their safes in areas where they can be encased in concrete. Avoid second- or third-floor installation since you may have to reinforce the adjoining ceiling to compensate for the combined weight of the safe AND the concrete. A ground floor is your best choice. Also, since you will be cutting directly into your floor it?s important that you are familiar with the construction of your house and the location of all important wiring and plumbing.
Step 3: Do It Yourself or Hire a Professional? Installing a floor safe is not a simple task. Some companies offer the option of installation with purchase, something to consider if you feel at all unsure about the process.
If you do decide to install it yourself, you will need to gather several items:
A detailed floor plan of your house
A map of all the plumbing in your house, from several angles
A generalized map of the electrical wiring in your house
A map of your house?s support beams
You should be experienced in pouring and mixing concrete. You need several different tools and materials. You should have extensive experience in completing complex home projects. If you feel you can successfully manage the installation yourself, here are the steps to follow:
How to install a floor safe
Procedures differ a bit from manufacturer to manufacturer, but most in-floor safes can be installed in an existing concrete floor by following these steps:
- Take the door off the safe, and tape the dust cover over the safe opening.
- Draw the shape of the body of the safe on the floor where it?s to be installed, allowing four inches extra width on each side. (If the safe has a square-body, make the drawing square, regardless of the shape of the safe?s door.)
- Use an electric jackhammer to break through the concrete to match your markings, using a shovel to make the hole at least three inches deeper than the height of the safe.
- Line the hole with plastic sheeting or a weatherproof sealant to help fight moisture buildup in the safe.
- Pour enough concrete in the hole to form a stable base for the safe to sit on.
- Put the safe in the hole, make sure it is flush and level, and fill in the remaining space with concrete mix. Use a trowel to level the concrete with the floor.
- When the concrete is dry, trim away the plastic, and remove any excess concrete.
The Final Step: Hiding Your Safe. Once your in-floor safe is installed, you need to decide the best way to conceal it. If it?s in a carpeted room, you can construct a carpeted trap door for camouflage. You can also place a heavy piece of furniture and an area rug over the safe?s location, but this makes it difficult to access stored items without some time and some heavy lifting. Be creative and use whatever solution works for your house!
