SHANKSVILLE, Pa. -- As the nation marks the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks this Saturday, in this remote corner of southern Pennsylvania, a memorial will be dedicated to the heroes of United Flight 93. The 40 passengers on board mobilized to fight the plane's four al Qaeda hijackers, averting what could have been far greater destruction.
The Huffington Post recently visited the site of Flight 93's crash, where a makeshift memorial has already attracted more than 1.5 million people. The new memorial's designer, family members of those who died here and visitors who made the trek to pay their respects shared their thoughts.
Unlike the other 9/11 sites in major cities, Shanksville's isolated location and its unique place in that tragic day's events is likely to make this memorial a place of pilgrimage.
"No one will mistake Shanksville for lower Manhattan or Washington," Jeff Reinbold, the National Park Service site manager said. "There's a peacefulness and serenity that's in sharp contrast to the violence that happened here."
