My Houzz: From Train Depot to Family Home

I really wanted to like this house more. I had a hard time seeing the kitchen, for example, as being very 'renovated.' Maybe it's the door and bench with the peeling paint - I hate peeling paint, always imagining it's falling off, getting into food, etc. It looks so sloppy, like the owners just don't care. When I was growing up, peeling paint meant down-market, a neighborhood of renters, falling property values: people who don't care enough about their homes to keep them painted and in good condition. That's what this house looked like when it was dilapidated.

I guess I wanted the house to look like it could be proud of itself again. Instead it looks shabby and hodge-podge inside. To me, it looks a little too much like hippies moved in and decorated it with garage-sale finds - a student's first flat.

The attic looks more like I expected the whole house to look: given a real face-lift and new life, clean, re-imagined and rejuvenated, like it's ready to face another hundred years with its head held high.

So, a little disappointed, but at least they saved an interesting structure.
