2 a.m. fire forces New Bedford family out of home | WPRI.com

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) -- A couple and their eight kids are now displaced from a New Bedford home after a fire early Thursday morning.

The flames broke out at a house at the corner of Deane and North Front Streets shortly before 2 a.m. The peak of one of the house's gables had some exterior damage.

Fire kept popping up in the attic, according to a New Bedford Fire official. It took nearly four and a half hours to put the fire out.

Sophia Cortes is a sister-in-law to the man who lives there. She told Eyewitness News as soon as she heard about the fire she rushed over to find her nieces and nephews outside, across the street; nobody was hurt.

One of her nephews told Sophia the fire started from a burning candle.

The family is now staying at a nearby hotel, paid for by the American Red Cross, which is also providing funds for food and clothing.
