An email from a dietitian just came across the list serve for the Columbia River Eating Disorder Network, an organization of helping professionals dedicated to supporting, improving and promoting change for those living with eating disorders. A patient who is in recovery from her eating disorder recently visited China and was surprised to find a bathroom scale in every hotel room she stayed. She?d hide it away, knowing the most triggering thing she could do was step on the scale and see the number she has long associated with her sense of worthiness. But when the cleaning crew would come, they?d put it back in its place, so she?d have to hide it again. The dietitian wondered if this is going to become the norm rather than the exception, given our society?s obsession with the obesity ?epidemic? and the pursuit of the thin ideal.
When I traveled to Las Vegas for work a year ago, I was shocked to find a scale in my hotel room. I thought ?Oh no, some of my clients would be really tempted by this.? Months or years of progress with intuitive eating could go out the window in a matter of seconds if they stepped on that scale. I?d seen a scale in the hotel gym before but not my actual room.?
Is a scale in our hotel room really necessary? Can people really not go a few days without weighing themselves? Fluctuations that we see in our weight from day to day are not true changes in muscle and/or fat mass. It is next to impossible to create a 3500 calorie deficit or surplus in a 24 hour period of time. When people weigh daily, what they mostly see is a change in water weight. How much salt we eat, the weather, and other factors influence our body weight from day to day.? It takes several days to several weeks to create a real shift in weight.
And, scales vary from one to the next so is it really going to help you ?monitor? your weight? Some of you may have noticed that you weigh more at the doctor?s office. You could weigh yourself at home just before you leave for your appointment and then weigh at the doctor?s office and the difference can be up to 10 pounds! Does that mean you gained 10 pounds on the way to the doctor? And which number is accurate?
I have had clients tell me they?ve packed a scale in their suitcase when they were in the throws of their eating disorder.?Soon, they might not have to bring their own. It wouldn?t surprise me if our government passed legislation that required hotels across the country to have bathroom scales in every room, just like they are requiring restaurants to place calories on menus. And it likely won?t stop there. But will this kind of legislation really help??And what about people who live with eating disorders? Seeing the calories at Starbucks will deter them from having their ?treat.? And having access to a scale in their hotel room will only encourage their drive for thinness. Health care professionals specializing in eating disorder treatment are very concerned, and for good reason. We cannot prescribe for one group of people what we diagnose as eating disordered in another population of people. Be Nourished will be working hard to stop the insanity!
In 2005 therapist Hilary Kinavey and nutritionist Dana Sturtevant started facilitating groups to help women let go of food/weight obsession. Realizing that they shared a similar approach and philosophy regarding food, weight, body image and health ? one directly counter to that of conventional institutional paradigms - the two decided to merge their practices to create a partnership that would offer a revolutionary approach to women seeking answers about eating disorders, weight concerns, exercise, and nutrition. Thus, Be Nourished was born. Encouraging a non-diet approach to food, weight and health, Be Nourished offers individual counseling, workshops, classes and retreats to tackle topics like conscious eating, hunger awareness, body acceptance, and self-compassion.
