Breakthrough on trade could clear way for vote (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration and lawmakers on Capitol Hill have taken steps toward breaking a stalemate that could clear the way for Congress to vote on three key free trade agreements, according to congressional officials and business representatives briefed on the plan. But obstacles remain to action on the trade deals pending since the George W. Bush administration.

The proposal would allow for a renewal of retraining assistance for American workers who lose their jobs because of foreign competition. The Trade Adjustment Assistance Program, or TAA, would be included in legislation on a coveted trade deal with South Korea.

The White House had threatened to hold up passage of the South Korea pact, along with trade agreements with Colombia and Panama, unless the retraining assistance was renewed.

The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because no formal announcement has been made.

President Barack Obama frequently cites the three trade pacts as deals that would give a boost to the U.S. economy, in part by making overseas markets more widely available to American companies.

The decision to link the Korean trade deal with extension of TAA could pave the way for early consideration of the three pacts by the Senate Finance Committee, chaired by pro-trade Montana Democrat Max Baucus. It remained unclear if the House Ways and Means Committee, which handles trade matters, would accept that formula for proceeding.

The assistance program was expanded two years ago as part of Obama's stimulus package to include aid for more displaced workers, but the expansion expired in February. Labor unions and some key Democratic lawmakers have demanded the expansion as a condition for supporting the trade deals.

While Republicans have typically been supportive of the TAA program, several GOP lawmakers had expressed concerns that the level of spending under the 2009 expansion is no longer sustainable given the Capitol Hill negotiations on debt and deficit.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell has said that TAA should be separate from consideration of the trade agreements.

The U.S. signed the trade pacts with South Korea, Panama and Colombia in 2007 under President George W. Bush. But the then-Democratic-led Congress never brought the agreements up for vote, giving the Obama administration time to renegotiate areas it found objectionable.

U.S. trade officials spent months negotiating outstanding issues on the pacts, reaching an agreement with South Korea in December. The pact would support up to 70,000 U.S. jobs, according to the administration.

Deals were struck this spring with Panama and Colombia, though all three agreements need congressional approval before they can be implemented.

The top Democrat on the Ways and Means Committee, Sander Levin of Michigan, said Monday that he would oppose the trade agreement with Colombia if it did not include specific language committing Colombia to carry out an action plan for protecting worker rights and ending violence against union organizers.

Suppression of worker rights in Colombia has been the main reason that many Democrats, labor groups and human rights groups have opposed the Colombia deal, which according to some estimates would boost the U.S. economy by $2.5 billion a year.

Levin and others have hailed the Colombian government for taking steps to fulfill obligations outlined in the action plan and said Monday that "refusal to refer to the Action Plan on Worker Rights in the implementing language is a fatal flaw."

Two other House Democrats, George Miller of California and James McGovern of Massachusetts, added later that failure to refer to the plan in the trade bill would "be a huge blow against Colombian workers" and "erase a major piece of leverage this country had to ensure change in Colombia."

Before we talk about the top concerns of boomers, let us try to define what makes a person a boomer! This group generally includes people born during the post World War II baby boom. As America recovered from the war, families grew. People dispute the exact years that produced boomers though.

I will accept the US Census Bureau?s idea that a boomer was born between 1946 and 1964. These birth years were also supported by Landon Jones who was credited with coining the term in the first place. This would put most boomers in their late 40?s to mid 60?s today. So right now, a boomer is in early to late middle age.

Younger boomers probably do not feel middle aged. Most older boomers do not feel old yet. Some people actually split out younger generation members from the older ones. Those born in the late fifties to early sixties get called Generation Jones somtimes.

While older boomers were characterized as being very individualistic and free spirited, younger ones may be more cynical and distrust government more.

Most boomers are still working, and according to recent studies, the majority do not really have plans to totally retire.

What Worries Boomers Today?

Unemployment numbers spiked for everybody. Statistics show that people over 55 got hit a lot harder. Unemployment rose more for older work, and so these older workers had a tougher time getting back to work. While they were struggling with a tough job market, economic woes probably caused investment account values to decline.

So while some of us are worried about going to work at all, most of us are very concerned about the savings we took a lifetime to build. We wonder if we can every rebuild our savings. We know we need those assets for our current security. Of course, we can also look ahead and worry about a comfortable retirement.

Advances in health and medicine promise us longer life spans. We boomers do worry about our health, and we also worry about health benefits. Longer life spans also increase the chance we will need more health care, and possibly nursing care.

We also wonder how we can possibly build retirement accounts we cannot outlive. Most boomers have no plans for total retirement. Some would like to leave their current jobs and pursue a 2nd career of retirement job.

Beyond some personal finance problems, we have global concerns. We have always worried about the environment. Now we wonder if we will experiences shortages and higher commodity prices which will make it even harder to stretch our budgets. Many of us still distrust government, but we do not ? as a group ? agree on a solution to the problem.

Some boomers have unique concerns. Many of us still care for kids, and now attend to aging parents. Even grown children struggle in the current economy, so we may still be providing support for them. There has been a wave of kids and grandkids moving back home..

There are a lot of great books on this topic and I suggest reading some of them, but at the end of the day it is best to get help at this point.

Twitter to get its own (unofficial) 2012 GOP debate (The Cutline)

The lead-up to the 2008 presidential election included debates sponsored by YouTube and Facebook--and now it appears 2012 will have at least one debate conducted via Twitter.

A GOP debate that organizers are calling the "First Presidential Townhall on Twitter" has been slated for July 20.

The virtual event?organized by the Republican Liberty Caucus and sponsored by TeaParty.net?is scheduled to take place between 3:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. ET.

So far, only Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann and Georgia businessman Herman Cain have been announced as participants. But organizers say others are slated to announce their involvement later.

"We will be releasing the names of the confirmed candidates after the 4th of July holiday to give the few remaining candidates who haven't confirmed time to get acquainted with the platform," TeaParty.net media director Dustin Stockton said in a statement.

The platform will isolate and organize tweets from the candidates and moderator (radio host Rusty Humphries), as well as those from the Twitterverse, on the 140TownHall.com website.

"We basically have an online tool that tracks all tweets for a specific account name and hashtag," Adam Green, founder of 140 Dev, the company that developed the platform, told Mashable.com. "It takes all those tweets, aggregates them into a database, separates the ones who are the lead speakers and puts them in one stream, and then puts the others in a separate stream."

A lefthand column will display real-time stats, such as how many followers, mentions and retweets each candidate is receiving. A center column will show the debate as it happens, with the moderator in blue and candidate in white. A righthand column will feature a tweet box, so the public can comment as the debate is going on.

Tweets from the event will be aggregated on the @140TownHall Twitter feed, too.

Green claims that the candidates themselves will be participating in the debate, not representatives or campaign aides.

While the platform will be utilizing Twitter's API, Twitter itself is not an official sponsor for the debate.

In the 2008 campaign cycle, CNN and YouTube partnered for a debate series in which candidates replied to questions submitted through YouTube. And ABC News and Facebook co-sponsored the 2008 New Hampshire Debates (with both parties debating on the same night, back-to-back), during which viewers were encouraged to interact on Facebook pages dedicated to the event.

Earlier this month, CNN hosted a GOP debate in New Hampshire, displaying live tweets and Facebook status updates on a large screen inside the hall.

As soon as I saw it listed on the menu at the new Minneapolis restaurant Mill Valley Kitchen, I knew the grilled plum salad ($7, pictured below right) had to be mine. I could taste the juicy plums, creamy goat cheese, and toothsome walnuts before the appetizer arrived on the table. Sadly, though, the reality didn?t live up to the dream. The plums had very few grill marks and tasted more sauteed than grilled. The walnuts were served raw, missing out on the oomph that toasting the nuts brings, and the flat spinach added no flavor. Most disappointingly, the raspberry vinaigrette had no seasoning to balance the sweetness of the fruit, and what I thought would be a knock-out was instead almost forgettable ? the key word here being almost.

Because rather than dismissing the salad with a sad shake of my head, instead I automatically started making a mental list of the things I would do to improve it. I?m not a trained chef by any means ? and would never claim to be ? but I?ve played around with enough greens / fruit/ nuts / dressing combinations to figure out which flavors go well together and what tricks home cooks can use to strengthen the impact of each ingredient. So what began as a rough idea turned into a reality in my kitchen last week, and I?m happy to report the result was quite satisfying.

I substituted peppery arugula for the bland spinach, which added a nice contrast to the sweeter notes of the plums (cut in halves rather than slices to maximize juiciness) and red onions. Both the plums and red onions were grilled for several minutes on each side so the surface sugars would caramelize and distinct grill marks would form. I sliced the larger, outside rings of the onion to scatter over the salad and diced the inner rings to add to my vinaigrette, which swapped out the raspberries for orange muscat champagne vinegar. I toasted the walnuts and chopped them finely so roughly the same number of nuts covered more of the salad?s surface area. Finally, I used an herb-studded goat cheese in place of the plain variety used in the Mill Valley Kitchen version, to add another flavor dimension.

The adapted version offers a more tantalizing, vibrant take on the original while sticking to the salad?s core ingredients. Make it once, and you?ll find yourself eating it again and again this summer. I know I will.

Grilled Plum Salad ? la Mill Valley Kitchen
Serves two

4 small plums, halved
4 oz arugula, rinsed and spun dry
1 ? ?-in-thick slice of red onion, cut from the center
? c walnuts, chopped and toasted
1 oz herb-flavored goat cheese
? c muscat orange champagne vinegar (available at Trader Joe?s)
? c extra-virgin olive oil
? tsp salt
? tsp black pepper

1. Lightly coat the surface of a grill pan with olive oil and heat to medium-high. When hot, place the plum halves on the grill and cook for five minutes on each side. Remove the plums and set aside.
2. Add the onion slice to the grill and cook for five to seven minutes on each side. Remove and separate the outer 3-4 rings from the interior and cut into strips. Dice the remaining inner rings of the onion and set aside.
3. Divide the arugula and red onion strips between two dinner-size plates. Add four plum halves and scatter the walnuts evenly over each plate.
4. Portion the goat cheese into bite-size chunks and divide between the two plates.
5. In a large glass measuring cup, pour the vinegar and add the diced red onion, salt and pepper. Slowly drizzle the olive oil into the measuring cup while vigorously whisking the vinaigrette. When emulsified, pour 2-3 tbsp over each salad. (You will have some dressing left over.)

China's admission spotlights Three Gorges woes (AFP)

BADONG, China (AFP) ? Last October, a huge chunk of hillside broke free in this city on the Yangtze River, and the deafening landslide nearly knocked Wang Songlian's home and a dozen others into a deep ravine.

But such incidents are hardly news in Badong, where the scars of frequent landslides are sprinkled throughout the city, and local residents blame seismic changes wrought by China's giant and controversial Three Gorges Dam project.

"It's due to the dam. There have been more landslides and tremors since 2003 (when the reservoir began to fill). It is definitely getting more dangerous," said Wang, 66.

Predicaments such as the one experienced by the people of Badong have become the subject of unprecedented debate since Beijing admitted in May that the dam had spawned a range of problems.

The government has long held up the world's largest hydroelectric project as a symbol of its engineering prowess, a solution to the frequent floods of China's longest river and a source of badly-needed electricity.

But a recent drought and the government's mea culpa have refocused attention on problems that dam critics say will have a far-reaching impact on China's water resources and on millions of people.

Dam construction began in 1994 despite warnings the enormous weight of the reservoir would dangerously alter central China's geology, uproot millions of people, poison water supplies by trapping pollution and disrupt the Yangtze watershed.

Criticisms were brushed aside and some critics jailed, but problems have reached a level the government can no longer ignore, said Patricia Adams, head of Toronto-based Probe International, which chronicles the dam's problems.

"Now that the dam is operating and its problems are plain for all to see, the current leaders have to distance themselves from it," Adams said.

"They are running for cover because the Three Gorges Dam is becoming a symbol of all that is wrong with political decision-making in China."

The most dramatic scenario cited by critics is the potential for seismic disturbance or even a catastrophic earthquake.

Located in Hubei province, the dam has created a reservoir stretching up to 600 kilometres (370 miles) through the scenic Three Gorges region, which is criss-crossed by geological faultlines.

Badong's steep terrain has always been prone to landslides but residents say the problem has clearly worsened. Several large landslides already have claimed a number of lives in the area, according to previous reports.

The main high school has large and widening cracks from the earthly turbulence and the city government has ordered tens of thousands of residents to be resettled from low-lying areas deemed landslide risks, say locals.

Yet promised funds are delayed or never materialise, they say, echoing well-documented complaints over a programme to resettle more than 1.4 million people for the reservoir which has been riddled with corruption.

"An earthquake is a concern of many people. You saw what happened at Wenchuan," said Zhao Liang, a Badong business owner, referring to a powerful 2008 earthquake that left 87,000 people dead or missing in nearby Sichuan province.

A report by Chinese government scientists last year, recently published by Probe International, said quakes in the region -- most under 3.0 magnitude -- had increased 30-fold since 2003 and slopes had been destabilised.

The dam's state-backed operator declined comment to AFP. But it defended the project this month in a report saying it had helped tame the flood-prone Yangtze and provided clean energy.

The dam did hold back huge amounts of water last summer during the river's worst flooding in a decade in what was hailed officially as proof of its value.

It also has steadily increased its electrical production, but that production is equal to only about two percent of total national output, according to official estimates and international energy agencies.

And it has come under mounting public criticism this year after central China's worst drought in decades turned some major lakes below the dam -- key water sources for the region -- into grasslands.

Critics say that would not have occurred if the Yangtze was allowed to flow naturally.

"The dam can cut the peak of the flooding but people now realise it means less water will get into those lakes. This significantly reduces water resources in the region," said Ma Jun, Beijing-based author of "China's Water Crisis."

Water quality is also worsening as the dam has impaired the river's natural self-flushing ability, he said.

Authorities in downstream areas are now drawing up plans for their own dams to retain water in direct response to the Three Gorges Dam's negative impact, state media reports said last week, prompting fears of an escalating crisis.

Despite the emerging lessons from the dam, authorities have built or are building dozens of other dams upstream on the Yangtze, imperilling the entire drainage system of one of the world's great rivers, Adams said.

"The disruption of the Yangtze's hydrological system spells doom for millions of people... who have made their livelihoods from the fish and agriculture and commerce of the Yangtze watershed," she said.

"The Three Gorges Dam will be crippled in its operations and a money pit, requiring never-ending expenditures to treat geological and hydrological problems caused by the dam."

American exposure to the Greece crisis is high in certain areas. Half the assets in the 10 biggest money market funds are invested in European banks, which hold a lot of Greece's debt.

Money market funds, usually considered nearly as safe as cash, are suddenly in the spotlight. Why? Millions of Americans hold money market funds, which invest heavily in foreign banks.

With protests roiling Greece, which teeters on the brink of national bankruptcy, many investors are suddenly wondering how vulnerable they are.

Most of the funds have virtually no direct Greek holdings. On the other hand, many have loaned out significant amounts of money to European banks that do have loans to Greece. Unless the Greek Parliament agrees to make sharp budget cuts, major European nations, including Germany and France, have said they will not make any more loans to Greece, which would drive the country to the edge of default.

So, how safe are investments in money market funds?

In a recent analysis, credit researchers at Fitch Ratings found that 50 percent of the assets of the 10 largest prime money market funds ? those that invest in vehicles other than government debt ? were invested with European banks though their American subsidiaries. This would mean about $800 billion is loaned out to such banking giants as Deutsche Bank, ING, Barclays and BNP Paribas. Most of those banks are borrowing money in the US, since short term interest rates are so low here.

Fitch found that the money market funds had 6.3 percent of their exposure to German banks, 14.8 percent to French banks and 9.7 percent to United Kingdom banks.

How vulnerable are those European banks? According to the Investment Company Institute (ICI), the actual exposure of European banks to Greek debt is relatively small. The most vulnerable bank has about 1 percent of its assets, and less than 10 percent of its capital, in Greek debt.

?If there was a total loss on Greek debt, the bank would lose 1 percent of its assets,? says Mike McNamee, an ICI spokesman. ?That would not tank the money market funds.?

Many investors remember that during the financial crisis in 2008, one money market fund, the Reserve Fund, fell below the sacrosanct net-asset-value of one dollar, because the fund had loaned out hundreds of millions of dollars to Lehman Brothers. To avoid a catastrophe, the Federal Reserve guaranteed the assets of the rest of the money market funds.

Six months later, Mr. McNamee notes, the industry voluntarily changed its own standards. Money market funds must now be able to tap 10 percent of their assets overnight and 30 percent within a week.

Hello everyone!! well I am done cleaning house, mopping etc..so hubby is good to go with holding the fort down while I am at home with my family..some of you may ask why he isn't going..its not that he doesn't want to support me..we just have too many babys to care for and trust no one..so I will feel better knowing that Hubby is home taking care of our babies..Plus I have my family and friends back home to help me..I am okay..course when I see my mom for the first time on monday..not sure..that will be tough for sure..but I think I will be okay..Yesterday I received a swap package from a gal that wanted to do a swap..and I gladly obliged..she sent me a cute little pan with "vanilla" scent fixins in it..and the refresher oil to go with it..and a little butterfly air freshner I will be putting in my car..;)..I sent her a sheep plate and a little pillow tuck..

China's Wen visits Britain amid release of rights activist (AFP)

LONDON (AFP) ? Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao toured Britain on Sunday and sought to strengthen trade links, as Bejing freed dissident activist Hu Jia in a move seen as defusing tensions over human rights.

Wen arrived in the central English city of Birmingham on Saturday on the second leg of an European mini-tour, while news emerged that Hu, one of China's most prominent prisoners of conscience, was to be released.

Hu, 37, was jailed on subversion charges in April 2008 after angering the ruling Communist Party through years of bold campaigning for civil rights, the environment and AIDS sufferers. His release followed that of outspoken Chinese artist Ai Weiwei last week.

On his first full day in Britain on Sunday, Wen launched the first new MG car to be made in 15 years, the MG6 model, hailing it as a potent symbol of friendship between London and Beijing.

The new MG6 will be assembled at the MG car plant in Longbridge, Birmingham, which is now owned by Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp (SAIC), China's largest automaker.

"The successful cooperation of the production of the MG6 and other MG vehicles is a symbol of the friendship between China and the UK," said Wen, speaking at Longbridge.

"The model can be summed up as designed in the UK, manufactured in China and assembled in the UK, thereby making the most of China's capital and markets, as well as the UK's technology and managerial expertise."

Outside the factory gates, several dozen protesters were gathered to demonstrate against the visit, including supporters of the Falungong spiritual movement, banned in China, and Free Tibet campaigners.

"Cameron and Wen. Human rights before trade," read the placards of some of the protesters.

The British government's trade minister Stephen Green also attended the MG6 launch and described SAIC as a "pioneer for Chinese investors in the UK".

The Chinese premier later held separate meetings with former British leaders Gordon Brown and Tony Blair and vowed that support to Britain and Europe would be "in concrete actions," according to China's state run news agency Xinhua.

Wen was keen to deepen China's "exchanges and cooperation with Britain and Europe", adding it was in the "fundamental interests" of both parties and vital for world peace and stability, reported the news provider.

Wen will hold talks with current British Prime Minister David Cameron on Monday and attend a UK-China summit -- at which Beijing is expected to unveil huge investment deals.

Meanwhile, Chinese dissident Hu returned home earlier Sunday after completing a jail term for subversion -- but seemed likely to be muzzled anew.

The human rights activist's release after more than three years in prison comes after Ai emerged last Thursday from nearly three months in police custody amid a government crackdown on dissent.

Hu is widely expected to be hit with the same strict curbs as those applied to Ai and a range of other activists and rights lawyers, who have apparently been ordered to keep quiet in exchange for their freedom.

Hu returned to his home on Sunday morning, his wife and fellow activist Zeng Jinyan said on Twitter.

Britain's Foreign Office has yet to give an official reaction to Hu's release.

EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton welcomed the news -- but her spokesman stressed the bloc's demands for Beijing to treat Hu fairly and accord him "full rights" after his release.

And Germany said it will press human rights issues at its first joint cabinet meeting with China later this week, including the conditions of Ai's release, Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said.

London has been among international critics, with Foreign Secretary William Hague repeatedly speaking out against Ai's detention.

Earlier on Sunday, Wen indulged his interest in Shakespeare with a visit to the bard's birthplace in Stratford-upon-Avon, where he was treated to performances of extracts from the play "Hamlet".

The premier, who began his trip in Hungary, will leave Britain on Monday for Germany, where he will stress his support for eurozone economies that have been rocked by a debt crisis, with Greece on the brink of a second bailout.

The walk-out in England and Wales, by members of the National Union of Teachers (NUT) and the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL), is expected to disrupt thousands of schools.

The Independent on Sunday has reported that Mr Gove had written to schools, to ask them to get parents to help keep schools open during the strike.

Asked whether he was suggesting that parents should go in to take lessons on Thursday, he said: "Well, parents going in to help certainly."

He said otherwise there would be "massive inconvenience" for working families - particularly single parents who would have to find childcare at short notice.

Unison, which represents court staff and immigration officers, tax officials and job centre workers, has called for a strike campaign "without precedent".

On Sunday, Business Secretary Vince Cable played down the idea that strike laws could be tightened as a final resort. He said the government was making no plans to do so and did not want to "go down that road".

Kevin Courtney, deputy general secretary of the NUT and one of those representing teaching unions at Monday's meeting at the Cabinet Office, said the government needed to back down over changes to public sector pensions.

He said: "What we are looking for is some sign that the government is prepared to move on the three central issues - paying more, working longer and getting less."
