A one-day turnaround between games didn?t give DePaul much time Friday to work on the flaws exposed in a poorly played 71-59 loss Thursday to Gardner-Webb.

But Blue Demons coach Oliver
Purnell said the biggest flaw shouldn?t take time to correct.

??Most of it is between the ears,?? he said. ??Look in the mirror. ?Is this OK? No, it?s not OK. It?s embarrassing. That?s not us.

??Offensively, defensively in the halfcourt, we need to play hard with our pressure. We need to be a fast, quick team, and none of those things happened.??

??We played poorly as a team and didn?t have any energy,?? said junior forward Cleveland Melvin, who had 18 points and eight rebounds but also committed five turnovers. ??We didn?t play any defense and didn?t rebound. We can?t have this ever again.??

Purnell was critical of what he called a lack of leadership, something he said he expects to come from his core of juniors, including Melvin, guard Brandon Young and swingman Moses Morgan.

??We have to have more leadership,?? Purnell said. ??I didn?t see any of that. We have to be tougher, be better and take more pride. It happens in college basketball. .?.?. But how do you respond to it???

The game was the first for DePaul (1-1) in the four-game Cancun
(Mexico) Challenge, which continues Saturday at Allstate Arena against Austin Peay (1-1). The
Demons will travel to Cancun next week to face Wichita State on Tuesday and Iowa or Western Kentucky on Wednesday.
