Sonnen: Belfort Not Improved But “Second Scariest” Fighter in UFC

Before Vitor Belfort was booked to fight Dan Henderson on November 9th, the punishing striker was hoping to land a fight with Chael Sonnen. Not surprisingly, “The American Gangster” was interested in fighting Belfort, particularly if it led to him securing the latter’s “number one contender” ranking.

Obviously, the fight didn’t get signed, as following Sonnen’s win over “Shogun” Rua he was booked to fight Rashad Evans at UFC 167. After that, Sonnen will coach opposite Wanderlei Silva in the latest season of TUF Brazil, and will fight “The Axe Murderer”.

But despite the fact Belfort-Sonnen won’t happen anytime soon, the charismatic fighter recently relayed at a Q&A session in Manchester, he still wants to fight ‘The Phenom”comments via MMA Weekly.com).

“I’ve been trying to fight Vitor for a long time now. And I think Vitor is awesome. I think Vitor is probably the second scariest guy in the UFC right now, right under Jon Jones,” said Sonnen. “But I think he’s beatable. I think I can beat him. And I really don’t care either way. I’m going to go punch him in the face repeatedly.”

Interesting no? Of course, Belfort did look particularly frightening in his head kick wins over Luke Rockhold and Michael Bisping. Sonnen, however, apparently doesn’t believe Belfort’s improved since he lost to Henderson in 2006.

“I can tell you Dan is better now than he was then. I don’t think Vitor is better. I think Vitor was very good back then, but I don’t think he’s better now. I think he’s just got a different haircut.”

Well, improved or not, hopefully Belfort will throw down with Sonnen at some point.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jon Lester pitched the Boston Red Sox within a whisker of yet another World Series championship.

Now, this bearded band goes back to Fenway Park just one win away.

"Pretty special time," Lester said.

Lester bested Adam Wainwright once again, journeyman David Ross hit a tiebreaking double in the seventh inning and the Red Sox downed the St. Louis Cardinals 3-1 Monday night to take a 3-2 Series edge.

David Ortiz delivered his latest big hit, too, putting Boston in position to capture its third crown in a decade. Not since 1918 have the Red Sox clinched the title on their own field.

"This atmosphere here, these three games, has been phenomenal. We know it's going to be equal to that, if not better. And we're excited about going home in the position we are," Red Sox manager John Farrell said.

Added Ortiz of Boston's century-old bandbox: "It's going to get loud out there."

John Lackey gets the first chance to win it Wednesday night against St. Louis rookie sensation Michael Wacha. A Cardinals victory would set up a most spooky proposition for both teams — Game 7 on Halloween night.

"It will be legendary if we go into Boston and win two games," Wainwright said.

Ortiz enjoyed even more success in Game 5 after moving up from cleanup to the third slot. He is 11 for 15 (.733) in this Series with two homers, six RBIs and four walks.

"I was born for this," Ortiz said, grinning.

The slugger left in a double switch, shortly after legging out a hit in the eighth. He was OK, and he'd already done enough damage to the Cardinals.

"What planet's that guy from?" Ross said.

Lester enhanced his reputation as an October ace with every pitch. He allowed one run and four hits in 7 2-3 innings, striking out seven without a walk. Nearly the same line he had in beating Wainwright in the opener.

"I think the biggest thing is me and Rossy have had a good rhythm," Lester said. "Early on, we just went back to our game plan from Game 1 and just fell back on that and really just tried to make them swing the bats early, and we were able to do that."

The lefty who's won all three of his career World Series starts had just one scary inning, when Matt Holliday homered in the fourth, Carlos Beltran flied out to the wall and Yadier Molina hit a liner. Other than that, Lester was sharp as a knife while retiring 12 in a row.

He tweaked himself late, but said he was all right. In fact, Lester's biggest brush with major trouble came well before his first pitch.

Lester was getting loose near the warning track when a team of eight Clydesdales pulling a beer wagon came trotting by — it's a Busch Stadium tradition and Lester moved aside to watch the horses.

He also took a brief break in the seventh. A giant paper airplane floated down from the stands, and some fans cheered its flight as it landed near the mound. Lester handed it to a ballboy, and retired Molina to end the inning.

"It was a tough loss. It was 1-1 in the seventh, that was obviously the game. Tip your cap to Ross, he hit a double to take the lead," Wainwright said. "Their guy Lester did a good job."

And he did it without any flap over his glove. During Game 1, a Cardinals minor league pitcher posted a picture on Twitter of discoloration on Lester's mitt and wondered if some foreign substance was there.

Lester said he merely used rosin for a better grip, and Major League Baseball said it didn't see anything wrong.

Koji Uehara got four outs for his second save. No crazy endings this time, either, following one night with an obstruction call and the next with Uehara's game-finishing pickoff.

The Cardinals went quickly in the ninth, and now need two wins in Boston. They overcame a 3-2 deficit at home to beat Texas for the 2011 title.

"The guys know what we have to do," manager Mike Matheny said. "We have to play the game. They have to lock arms, trust each other and play the game the right way. Most of it is going to be the mentality of not buying into any kind of stats, any kind of predictions, any kind of odds. And go out and play the game."

Ortiz put Boston ahead with an RBI double in the first, hitting the first pitch after Dustin Pedroia doubled on an 0-2 curve. Ortiz singled the next time up and tied the Series record by reaching base in nine straight plate appearances.

Big Papi and the Red Sox took two of three at the NL park despite playing without a designated hitter. Ortiz became the first baseman, putting slugger Mike Napoli on the bench.

The Red Sox lead the Series despite a .205 team batting average. Ortiz has one-third of the team's 33 hits.

Ross, a graybeard on a team led by scraggly veterans, broke a 1-all tie when he hooked a drive just inside the left-field line, and the ball bounced into the seats for a go-ahead double.

"How about that? It's nice to drive in runs," Ross said. "I've got to credit the guys in front of me."

Jacoby Ellsbury later hit an RBI single, and Ross was thrown out at the plate trying to score on the play.

A day after Ortiz delivered a stirring, in-game pep talk to rev up the Red Sox, the Cardinals could've used some inspiration themselves — perhaps a visit from the good-luck Rally Squirrel from their 2011 title run.

The St. Louis hitters went quietly, a couple slinging their bats after routine popups and fly balls and others questioning the solid calls by plate umpire Bill Miller.

Holliday shook St. Louis' slumber and broke Lester's string with his second home run of the Series. Lester had pitched 16 1-3 scoreless innings in his first three World Series starts before Holliday tagged him.

That was all St. Louis got. Not even a revamped lineup that included the hobbled Allen Craig helped the Cards.

Wainwright changed things the next time Ortiz came up, varying his tempo and delivery. Ortiz still hit it hard while lining out to center.

Wainwright struck out 10 in seven innings, becoming the first Cardinals pitcher to reach double digits in the Series since Bob Gibson did it twice in 1968 against Detroit.

It was a big sports night in St. Louis, with an NFL game between the Rams and Seattle eight blocks away at the Edward Jones Dome. This is a baseball town, clearly: Football tickets sold for $10 on StubHub as kickoff approached, and fans inside the dome loudly booed when the World Series game was taken off the video board.

The baseball fans got to see Lester do more than pitch. He helped himself in the field, knocking down a hard comebacker and swiftly handling a bunt. He also made a dent with his bat, sort of.

Coming in with a career 0-for-31 mark at the plate, he nubbed a ball in front of the plate and was thrown out leading off the third. But at least he broke Wainwright's string of five straight strikeouts, one shy of the postseason record tied by Detroit's Justin Verlander against Boston in the AL championship series.

NOTES: The Red Sox struck out 14 times, raising their total to a postseason-record 156. Boston began the day with 142, tied with the 2010 champion Giants. ... RF Shane Victorino was again out of the Red Sox lineup because of lower back stiffness. ... Wacha is 4-0 with a 1.00 ERA in four postseason starts, including a win in Game 2.

Biden visits Austin domestic violence hotline

WEST LAKE HILLS, Texas (AP) — His voice thick with emotion, Vice President Joe Biden on Wednesday again toured the National Domestic Violence Hotline he helped create, calling victims of such abuse "prisoners in plain sight."

Housed in an unmarked building in suburban Austin, the hotline was founded in 1996, two years after Congress approved the federal Violence Against Women Act, which Biden sponsored while still a senator from Delaware.

"I came primarily to say thank you," Biden told a packed room of staff members and media. "There's nothing I've been involved with my entire career that makes me prouder, that I think is more sustaining, is more consequential than the work you all do."

Biden previously visited the hotline as vice president in 2009 and as a senator three years earlier.

Hotline President Katie Ray-Jones said more than 100 staff members handle about 22,000 calls a month — but that capacity issues meant they still were unable to get to almost 52,000 calls in 2012 alone.

The vice president said women can be held captive by their abusers and that often "the only voice that a woman in distress hears is yours and the folks here in Austin, Texas."

The center has seen traffic on its website increase 30 percent during the last 12 months, and it is now receiving about a third of its contacts via Internet. Biden's visit coincides with the unveiling of a new online chat service, thanks to a $250,000 donation from Verizon.

The chat service will only be available Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. Central time, to start, but the hotline hopes to raise additional funding to eventually offer it around the clock.

Ray-Jones said the hotline previously set up a chat service pilot program and saw the number of victims reporting sexual violence spike. It's now bracing for that trend to continue after the rollout of the full chat service.

"The Internet and a chat function offers an additional layer of privacy that you don't have over the phone," she said. "There's another layer of vulnerability when I'm on a phone call and you can hear that I'm crying."

Ray-Jones also said that in some cases, women who are abused don't have access to phones or can't call because their abuser closely monitors phone records. Chatting via Internet can overcome some of those hurdles.

The hotline receives $3.2 million annually in federal funding. Biden said he and President Barack Obama would like $4.5 million for it, but that because of across-the-board government spending cuts known as the sequester, it could fall to $2.9 million.

Biden also toured the facility, personally greeting all of the workers fielding calls. Staffers gave only their first names, citing the hotline's confidentiality rules — but one of the first people Biden hugged was Cassandra, who took the hotline's 3 millionth call July 20.

Meanwhile, an employee named Cindy was still on a call when she saw Biden and began dancing on the balls of her feet with excitement. Upon finishing the call, she rushed forward when Biden smiled.

"I knew you'd remember!" she cried, enveloping him in a bear hug. "I've been here since 3:30 this morning waiting for you."

Biden visited with actress Mariska Hargitay of "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" fame, who he described as being such a passionate advocate for the cause that he didn't know how she had time for a day job. Hargitay also chatted with those fielding calls, and grew teary-eyed when she told them: "I'm so honored to be here."

"You can stay!" cried one of the center employees, drawing chuckles.

According to the Texas Democratic Party, the most-recent state statistics show that in 2011 there were 177,983 incidents of domestic violence, and that 102 women were killed as the result. Some 11,833 Texas adults and 14,578 Texas children ended up in shelters because of domestic violence that year — but 21 percent of adults seeking shelter were denied due to lack of space.

Daniel Radcliffe Scores Lead Role in “Gold”

He’s one of the most diverse actors of his generation, and Daniel Radcliffe is gearing up to enter the world of (movie) politics.

The “Harry Potter” star will play British politician and former track and field star Sebastian Coe in the forthcoming James Watkins flick “Gold.”

Per the synopsis, “Sebastian Coe, obsessive and nurtured, is a quiet loner driven to the limit of endeavor by his ambitious father. Steve Ovett, effortless and natural, is a confident joker and outsider, fighting to prove himself in an elitist world.”

“Both are fueled by rivalry but burdened by the weight of expectation and fear of failure. Lovers, family loyalties and the human spirit are tested to breaking point in a relentless race for glory. Inspired by a crescendo of real-life events – this is a movie about winning, losing and the pursuit of immortality.”

Ashton Kutcher is Lenovo's latest 'product engineer'

Ashton Kutcher

Much in the same way that I'm a famous Hollywood actor, I'm sure.

Anyway, this is all in conjunction with those new Lenovo tablets — which look far more interesting than another celebrity "executive."

Here's how Lenovo put it:

In his new role as a Lenovo product engineer, Kutcher will work with the company’s engineering teams around the world to develop and market the Yoga line of tablets by providing input and decision-making into design, specifications, software and usage scenarios.

Regardless, it's a fine excuse for us to run a nice little gallery of ol' @aplusk.

Nadal beats Granollers at Paris Masters

PARIS (AP) — Top-seeded Rafael Nadal advanced to the third round of the Paris Masters on Wednesday, and Roger Federer qualified for the ATP Finals for a 12th straight year.

Nadal beat Marcel Granollers 7-5, 7-5 in an all-Spanish meeting, and Federer topped Kevin Anderson 6-4, 6-4.

"I didn't play well tonight," Nadal said. "Something that can happen after two weeks without playing and after a long time without playing on this kind of surface."

Nadal broke for a 6-5 lead in each set and clinched the victory when Granollers sent a forehand wide. The match stats pointed to a narrow margin of victory, with Nadal hitting 20 winners to 15 for Granollers and making 23 unforced errors compared to 22 for his opponent.

"The rhythm of my legs tonight was poor," Nadal said. "I'm slower than usual, and a lot of mistakes, easy mistakes."

Nadal was playing at the Paris Masters for the first time since 2009. He missed the tournament the past three years because of injuries or fatigue.

"The victories in days that you are not playing well have much more value than the victories on days that you play well," Nadal said.

The U.S. Open champion is seeking a record sixth Masters title in a single season. He will face last year's runner-up, Jerzy Janowicz of Poland, in the third round.

Nadal unseated Novak Djokovic atop the rankings by reaching the final of the China Open in October. He has a 30-2 record on hard courts this year.

Federer has had a rough season by his own high standards, losing in the second round at Wimbledon and in the fourth round at the U.S. Open to drop to No. 6 in the rankings.

"It's definitely somewhat of a highlight of the season for me after having a tough few months to still make it to the World Tour Finals," Federer said.

The fifth-seeded Federer took a 5-1 lead in the second set and held off a late charge.

"Tough isn't always negative," Federer said. "I like it when it's not so easy. But it's true, I had to get up again after being sort of knocked down numerous times this year. I feel really good again, probably the first time ever since maybe Dubai."

Defending champion David Ferrer, Juan Martin del Potro and Stanislas Wawrinka also moved into the third round.

Ferrer overcame Lukas Rosol 6-0, 2-6, 6-3, and Del Potro beat Marin Cilic 6-4, 7-6 (3).

Cilic was playing only his second match since the end of his four-month ban for a positive doping test, while del Potro entered the Paris Masters following titles at the Swiss Indoors and Japan Open, plus a runner-up finish at the Shanghai Masters.

Del Potro capitalized on a backhand error from Cilic to break for 5-4 in the opening set. The fourth-seeded Argentine then took a 6-2 lead in the tiebreaker and clinched the victory on another backhand error from Cilic.

Meanwhile, Wawrinka defeated Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to stay in the race for the two remaining ATP Finals spots. In the final set, the seventh-seeded Swiss broke Lopez in the second game and did not face any break points.

John Isner, Nicolas Almagro, Gilles Simon, Grigor Dimitrov and Philipp Kohlschreiber also won their second-round matches.

Isner outlasted Polish qualifier Michal Przysiezny 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-3.

Simon edged wild card Nicolas Mahut 6-4, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (3) in an all-French meeting, Almagro of Spain beat Ivan Dodig 6-4, 6-3, Bulgaria's Dimitrov overcame Fabio Fognini 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, and Kohlschreiber cruised past Tommy Haas 6-2, 6-2 in an all-German match.
