LOUISVILLE, Ky. (News Release)? On September 1, the NCAA Division III Management Council granted Spalding University active membership status upon the recommendation of the NCAA Division III Membership Committee.?

?This recognition confirms the hard work and dedication of our student-athletes, who excel on the field and succeed in the classroom,? says President Tori Murden McClure. ?It also is a testament to the growth and renewal happening at Spalding.?

The past four years, Spalding athletics has been a provisional D III member. In the 2012-13 academic year, Spalding will be eligible to participate in NCAA championships for the first time. Division III status also gives the university the right to vote at the NCAA Convention.

?Besides full voting rights, Spalding will be eligible to apply for NCAA grant programs, which can enhance our department and institution as a whole,? says Charlie Just, NCAA compliance officer and women?s basketball head coach.

Division III status offers national recognition for student-athletes? accomplishments with All-American and Academic All-American honors. It also affords graduates the opportunity to apply for post-graduate scholarships.

?Our students and their academic endeavors come first,? says Athletic Director Roger Burkman. ?Athletics allow them to build character and work as part of a team.?

As a Division III institution, Spalding aims to develop student-athlete potential through what NCAA Division III recognizes as a holistic educational approach that includes rigorous academics, competitive athletics and opportunity to pursue other interests and passions.

On September 13, the Golden Eagles celebrated the milestone, with a press conference and campus-wide pep-rally, attended by President Tori Murden McClure, Mayor Greg Fischer, Athletic Director Roger Burkman, and Jean Orr, assistant director of academic and membership affairs for Division III.

?Spalding?s designation as an NCAA Division III school is a well-deserved honor,? says Mayor Fischer. ?Spalding has been doing great things for our downtown community as they continue to grow and innovate, and we are excited to see the benefits their designation will bring to the school?s faculty, staff, and students, and to our entire city.?
