It has been quite a while since Vodafone stocked any Sony (or Sony Ericsson) devices, thankfully that has all changed and the UK network has now welcomed the Xperia T and Miro into their list, and both can be picked up direct at Vodafone from today. ?There is also a third handset been taken on in the Xperia J and this should be on sale shortly.
Heidi from the Vodafone Tech Team (you might know her better as ^HS on the @VodafoneUK twitter account) has visited the UK Sony HQ and managed to get some hands on time to show these great new devices off.

Business finance levels to small and medium-sized businesses has risen for the third consecutive year to a total of ?8.9bn, says the National Association of Commercial Finance Brokers.
The survey revealed that there has been an increase of 100 per cent in equipment and asset finance, funded by NACFB brokers, a further increase in lending for commercial property and another increase for lending in the short term ? around a 41 per cent rise this time.
NACFB Chief Executive, Adam Tyler, told Bridging and Commercial:
?We have continued to see the SME community struggling to raise funding whilst being faced with increased costs. Our latest figures reveal the true position of both excellent and vulnerable businesses across the whole of the UK.
?Despite many lenders? protestation that they are lending more than ever, these figures reveal what anecdotal evidence has already shown: that funding for businesses is still hard to access, but it has improved, if you know where to look. The NACFB has 83 different commercial lenders that are part of its 1,000-member organisation.?
Commercial mortgages increased by more than 26 per cent with asset finance increasing by 100 per cent. In particular, asset finance brokers have observed increased activity and these numbers are on track with growth of the membership of the Association, in this division, in the last 12 months. Business finance lending in the short term has increased by more than 40 per cent.
This news is welcome despite confidence from small businesses in Funding for Lending and the National Loan Guarantee Scheme, and the increase in refusal of loan applications.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) ? Some of Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney's prominent supporters are reversing course and backing Missouri GOP Senate candidate Todd Akin's embattled campaign against Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill.
Former Missouri Sens. Kit Bond and Jim Talent said Friday they are now behind the candidate they once shunned for his remarks on "legitimate rape."
"As a Missourian, I believe it is vital to have a senator and a Senate who will cooperate in creating jobs, repealing Obamacare , and controlling federal spending and the federal deficit," said Talent, who is Romney's adviser on Russia and defense policy.
"Todd can win," added Bond, who has endorsed Romney.
Earlier this week, Sen. Roy Blunt, a Missouri Republican who is Romney's liaison to Congress, endorsed Akin.
The trio would appear to be at odds with Romney, who suggested that Akin "accept their counsel" and leave the race back when they joined two other Missouri GOP elders ? former Sens. John Danforth and John Ashcroft ? in a formal statement forcefully urging Akin to exit the campaign. The Romney campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Akin has apologized for the rape comment for weeks but refused to leave the race. He lost the financial backing of the National Republican Senatorial Committee and the deep-pocketed Crossroads group affiliated with GOP strategist Karl Rove, and there are no signs either group has plans to re-enter the race.
Some members of the Missouri Republican political establishment are switching course, though not everyone. Danforth still has not backed Akin, and multiple attempts by The Associated Press on Friday to reach Ashcroft were unsuccessful.
In his own statement, Bond pledged to help oust Democrats from the Senate majority and said Akin's rape comments "were unacceptable but he's apologized, I believe his regret is sincere, and it is time to focus on the national stakes in this election."
The endorsements came as Akin was answering questions about his characterization Thursday of McCaskill as not being very "ladylike" in a Sept. 21 debate.
Contrasting the approach with her 2006 debates against then-Sen. Talent, Akin said McCaskill "had a confidence and was very much more sort of ladylike and all."
McCaskill said Akin's remarks left her "a little speechless."
"I'm hoping that people will weigh in and defend me that I was polite and calm. This wildcat, you know, furious and unladylike is kind of a headscratcher," she said.
But Akin did not back off his assertion.
"We've got a couple words in the English language, one is a gentleman and a lady," Akin said Friday. "I think those are pretty self-explanatory terms, and I was using them just as the English language uses those terms."
While some appeared offended at those words, "it seems to me the offensive thing is the voting record that's destructive to the people of our state," Akin said.
In the Missouri House, where Akin began his political career, the rules of debate require lawmakers to refer to colleagues as "lady, gentleman or representative."
Also Friday, Akin said he had been arrested during an anti-abortion protest more than two decades ago, but he didn't provide details of where or when the event occurred.
In a video circulating widely on the Internet, Akin is seen discussing his involvement in an anti-abortion demonstration and says, "You know, don't tell anybody I'm a jail bird." He also says in the video that "a bunch of us sat in front of these doors and the police gave us a ride to the free hotel for a while, and you know how it goes."
Asked at a news conference Friday in Kansas City to confirm the arrest, Akin said: "Yeah, well, certainly. Probably about 25 years ago or so I was involved in some peaceful protests. As I've made very clear I don't apologize for being pro-life. I stand up for the things I believe in."
Akin's comments have loomed large in Missouri's Senate race since shortly after he won the Aug. 7 Republican primary. They also have generated ripples through national politics, including the presidential race and Republicans' efforts to gain the four seats necessary to win control of the Senate from Democrats.
Democrats have attempted to link Akin's "ladylike" comment to his remark about "legitimate rape" to suggest he is insensitive to women and to help drive their own fundraising efforts.
The Democratic National Committee and Emily's List, which backs Democratic women who support abortion rights, both cited the remarks in fundraising emails Thursday. On Friday, New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand highlighted Akin's remarks as the centerpiece of an online fundraising drive to raise $75,000 for McCaskill in two days.
Akin also received a recent fundraising boost, picking up the endorsement Thursday of the Senate Conservatives Fund, whose members pledged $290,000 for his campaign.

Every once in a while, I?ll get into a conversation about being a science fiction writer and during these conversations, it is inevitable that someone will ask, ?What books have you written?? I think it is natural for someone to assume that a writer produces books, so I gently explain that I don?t write book. I am a short fiction writer. I write stories. I may list some of the stories I?ve sold and usually one of the titles will result in the question, ?Oh, that sounds interesting. What is that story about??
And I always find myself fumbling to describing what the story is about.
I was thinking about this on my short commute home yesterday and I decided there are two reasons for this:
First, unlike a novel, which can be made to sound interesting in a paragraph or two, it is much more difficult to compress the description of a short story. A short story is already compressed; all of the fat has been cut out of it. Each and every word more the story along to its ultimate conclusion. The story itself is its own description, and trying to spend a few sentences describing it in specific terms is difficult (for me at least) because the story is designed to be self-describing. Read it and you know what it is about. For my technology friends, I liken this to file compression. Compress a large text file and you often get a much smaller, more compact file. This is the ?description? of a novel. But compress an already compressed file, and you don?t get a much smaller file. Indeed, on occasion, you will get a larger file. The file is already as compressed as can be and the description doesn?t help.
Second?and for me this is a more recent phenomenon?once I?ve written the story, I?ve moved on. Indeed, by the time a story I?ve written sees print, it?s likely that I?ve written two or three other stories. Everything I had to say about the story, I said?in?the story. About the only interesting detail to add may be the genesis of the story, which is not really about the story itself at all. I find it difficult to talk about a story that I?ve written months or years ago because my mind is always on the story that I?m working on now. It reminds me of Harlan Ellison?s response to the question, ?Of all your stories, which is your favorite???to which he would respond: ?The one I?m working on now.?
The best I can do, therefore, is to try to come up with snappy one-liners that are much more about generating interest than describing the story. So, for instance, when people ask me what my?Analog story ?Take One for the Road? was about, I?d tell them, ?It?s a murder mystery set on Mercury.? It doesn?t?really describe the story. The story is both more and less than that. To describe the story you need to?read the story. But it?s the best that I can do. One positive result of this is that I?ve never even considered trying to describe a story in a cover letter, as I understand some novices do. The best way to find out what one of my stories is about is to read it.
So I?m curious, do my writer-friends have this problem with their stories? Do you have difficulty describing them? Do you even care to describe them, or do you?as I do?prefer the stories to speak for themselves?

Choosing the right entity
You finally decided to form your own legal entity. However, how would you know which one is the best choice for you particular needs?
To make this choice wisely it is important to understand the basic differences between various types of legal entities. This article focuses on comparison between LLC (limited liability company), one of the most popular business entities today, and various forms of corporation, namely C- and S-Corporation.
C-Corporation vs. S-Corporation
All corporations start as C-Corporations and are required to pay income tax on taxable income generated by the corporation. An C-Corporation becomes a S-Corporation by completing and filing federal form 2553 with the IRS.
Taxation:
An S-Corporation?s net income or loss is ?passed-through? to the shareholders and are included in their personal tax returns. Because income is NOT taxed at the corporate level, there is no double taxation as with C corporations.
Difference in income allocation:
Subchapter S-Corporations, as they are also called, are restricted to having no more than 100 shareholders, and cannot be owned by C-Corporations, other S-Corporations, many trusts, LLCs, partnerships, or non-resident aliens.
LLC vs. C-Corporation
There are three principle differences between LLC and C-Corporation:
The entities are taxed differently:
An LLC is a pass-through tax entity, meaning that the income is not taxed at the company level (however, LLC is still required to complete a tax return). The income or loss as shown on this return is ?passed through? the business entity to the individual shareholders or interest holders, and is reported on their individual tax returns.
C-Corporation is a separately taxable entity, and pays tax on the income prior to any dividend distributions to shareholders. If and when corporate earnings are distributed to shareholders in the form of dividends, the corporation does not receive the reasonable business expense deduction, and dividend income is taxed as regular income to the shareholders.
The entities differ in their structure:
LLCs are less rigid in their structure than corporations, so you have more flexibility in adapting the LLC to your unique business. The Operating Agreement of an LLC can be structured in a limitless amount of ways.
Formality:
A corporation is a formal entity with officers and directors (at least one of each) required. An LLC, on the other hand, can be ?member managed? and run in a less formal way. For small, start-up businesses, less formality means you can focus on making money rather than administrative work.
LLC vs. S-Corporation
Even though LLC and S-Corporation have a lot in common, those two types of entities differ on the following:
Difference in income allocation:
While S-Ccorporation special tax status eliminates double taxation, it lacks the flexibility of an LLC in allocating income to the owners. An LLC may offer several classes of membership interests, while an S-Corporation may only have one class of stock.
Ownership restrictions:
Any number of individuals or entities may own interests in an LLC. However, ownership interest in an S-Corporation is limited to no more than 100 shareholders, and S-Corporations cannot be owned by C-Corporations, other S-Corporations, many trusts, LLCs, partnerships, or non-resident aliens. Also, LLCs are allowed to have subsidiaries without restriction.
Those are just the principle differences between the three most popular entities. However, when choosing to organize a business one should consider other less popular types of legal entities, as those might answer to particular needs of the business. Consider discussing your situation with a licensed attorney or a CPA, familiar with your situation and whatever requirements your state might have for forming various business entities.

Concerns have been raised by the National Secular Society that the UK?s stance on free speech could be compromised by an agreement signed at the United Nations between this country and the Organisation of Islamic Co-operation (OIC).
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Baroness Sayeeda Warsi ? the new ?Minister for Faith? ? and pledges that the UK and the OIC will ?work together on issues of peace, stability and religious freedom.?
At present, the OIC is agitating at the United Nations for a global blasphemy law that would make criticising or satirising religion a punishable offence.
Terry Sanderson, president of the National Secular Society, said: ?We are all for co-operation between nations to try to foster peace and understanding, but the concept of ?religious freedom? is one that the OIC has distorted to mean restrictions on free expression.
?We hope that by signing this document the UK will not in any way compromise its commitment to human rights ? particularly the human right to free speech. The British Government has been steadfast in its opposition to the OIC?s blasphemy proposals up until now. We hope that this document will not change that in any way.?
Baroness Warsi?s other remit ? as well as being ?Minister for Faith? ? is at the Foreign Office and includes being the lead minister responsible for Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Central Asia, the UN, the International Criminal Court and the OIC, which is the largest multi-lateral organisation in the world after the UN.
She became the first British minister to speak at the OIC?s conference in June 2011 in Astana, Kazakstan. Previously she had hosted the secretary-general of the OIC in London and visited its secretariat in Jeddah, while she was in Saudi Arabia for performing Hajj. This led to the appointment of Britain?s first special representative to the organisation and its 57 members. Baroness Warsi has visited Pakistan five times during the past two and a half years in government, a country which was so central to the formation of the Islamic Conference.
In the landmark agreement there is a particular emphasis on promoting the ?key role Muslims have played in shaping modern Britain? and encouraging Muslim communities to play a key role at all levels in public life.
Lady Warsi said: ?When I addressed the OIC Conference in Kazakhstan in June 2011, I said we face the global challenges together. This agreement formalises that, establishing our many, many areas of co-operation, from security to conflict prevention; from religious freedom to human rights. One of the central aims of my new role will be to strengthen this relationship further and I am looking forward to ensuring we continue to work closely to achieve our mutual goals.?
She also praised the Framework Co-operation Agreement, signed with the OIC?s secretary-general, for its focus on promoting inter-religious understanding and interfaith dialogue, especially as these are two vital areas in the senior minister?s new governmental role.
Terry Sanderson commented: ?There is certainly a need for some kind of inter-religious understanding among OIC member states, a number of which suppress Christianity and other religions in a brutal and merciless fashion.
?The blasphemy law which is being proposed by the OIC on behalf of its members would be an entirely dangerous and regressive step if it were to be approved at the UN. It is quite clear that it would be used to persecute and oppress non-Muslim minorities in Muslim-majority countries, as the domestic blasphemy law in Pakistan does at present.
Mr Sanderson continued: ?In Egypt the blasphemy laws are also used to get rid of political opponents and are sometimes used as a means of revenge by neighbours or colleagues who are in dispute. We do not need this kind of primitive legislation in our democracies and we need reassurance from our Government that their resolve remains unaffected by the signing of this agreement with the OIC.?

Depending on your problem associated with house, work standing and also earnings, it is possible to be eligible for a a loan as high as $1500, however some loan providers may lend no more than $500. You will have possibility to observe how much you be entitled to prior to accepting any mortgage loan agreement.
There is an essential legitimate big difference from the present along with a bank loan. A really generous family member or buddy may offer you $5000 for car repairs, for instance. In case there is no expectation of payment, the amount of money could be a present. The actual provider couldn't file suit for repayment after inside a municipal match. But when the credit provider designates the amount of money just like a bank loan and also the customer pays back a buck, the cash may very well be a legitimate loan as well as the loan company may need repayment anytime. Small statements courts invest a lot of time determining whether a financial transaction which include cash would have been a present or perhaps loan. For this reason documents is important when designing personal financial loans to buddies as well as loved ones.
The requirements for getting that loan are quite obvious. If you're employed, having a regular monthly revenue of $800 or maybe more, this will let you banking account, you satisfy the basic requirements. Some loan providers inside our network might have additional needs.
Money financial products tend to be unsecured financial loans eliminated upon the next wage. Since they're short-term financial loans, they could be little; varying from $100 to $1500 and also payment comes to your next pay day. They may be very useful for overcoming a brief fiscal emergency, nevertheless really should not be thought to be a long-term financial solution.

Many home loan programs are addressed through banking institutions or other professional lenders. They may make use of a variety of criteria to determine if your potential consumer is qualified for a financial loan. Previous credit score is practically always regarded as, together with existing income and assets. The goal of the money may also be a good issue-a established investment chance might have more appeal when compared with a good misguided concept for any new eating place. One essential consideration could be the earnings in order to debt ratio in the client. Can the customer have the ability to pay the loan back along with interest? Skilled loan companies generally 'sell' money, so debtors must be aware just how much financing truly 'costs' when it comes to actual money.

The?Curiosity rover's latest Mars photo?captured the planet's largest Martian moon, Phobos, during a Martian evening, revealing the satellite as a faint crescent moon.
"Moon Over Mars: I snapped a pic of one of Mars' moons, Phobos, in the twilight sky over Gale crater," NASA's Curiosity team announced on the mission's Twitter page @MarsCuriosity, writing as the rover itself, on Wednesday (Sept. 26) ? the same day Curiosity made its longest drive yet.
The photo shows Phobos as a faint white crescent that almost blends in with the Martian sky. A black blemish also appears in the image, but is merely the result of a bad pixel in the image data, rover officials said.
"When you send images from 179 million miles away, stuff happens," they added via Twitter.?
The new photo of Phobos is Curiosity's latest view of Martian moons from the surface of the Red Planet. Earlier this month, Curiosity snapped photos of Phobos as it crossed part of the sun, creating a partial?solar eclipse on Mars.
Mars has two moons, Phobos and Deimos, both of which are much smaller than Earth's moon. Phobos is about 14 miles wide (22 kilometers), making it the largest Martian satellite. Deimos is about 9.3 miles across (15 km) at its largest point and is farther from Mars than Phobos.?
The Curiosity rover's Phobos photos are just part of the science work the car-size robot has been performing on Mars. The rover landed inside the planet's vast Gale Crater on Aug. 5 and is currently driving toward its first science destination, a location called Glenelg.
On Wednesday, Curiosity drove 160 feet (48.9 meters) closer to Glenelg, marking its longest single drive of its mission so far. To date, the rover has covered about a quarter-mile (416 meters) on Mars.
NASA's?Mars rover Curiosity?is expected to spend at least two years exploring Gale Crater to determine if the region could have ever supported microbial life. Mission scientists plan to drive the rover up a 3-mile (5-km) mountain ? Mount Sharp ?that rises from the crater's center.
NASA will hold a press conference today at 2 p.m. EDT (1800 GMT) today to update the media and public on Curiosity's progress on Mars. You can watch the press conference?live on SPACE.com here.

Clackamas River Water District officials learned this week that the troubled agency will lose its liability and property insurance at the end of the year because of "ongoing instability and internal conflict."
The Special Districts Association of Oregon, which provides low-cost insurance to hundreds of state agencies, said it has a "fiduciary responsibility" to protect other members from costs and liability generated by the Clackamas County water district's contentious and dysfunctional board.
In the past decade, Clackamas River Water has burned through six general and interim managers and, because of recurring accusations of mismanagement, submitted to three expensive special audits and a half-dozen ethics and workplace complaints.
An investigation by The Oregonian this summer found that Clackamas River Water wastes so much money on infighting and generates so many legal problems that it risked getting kicked out of the state's shared insurance pool. At the time of the July 1 report, the district was entrenched in six lawsuits and an FBI inquiry.
It is only the second time in 20 years that the state insurance pool has dropped a special district. The Charleston Rural Fire Protection District in Coos Bay lost its insurance after board members threw chairs during meetings, filed lawsuits and frequently fired fire chiefs.
The Clackamas River Water board is nearly a mirror. An Oregonian analysis found that Clackamas River has the highest legal bills of any Portland-area water district, racking up about $1 million in the past four years ? mostly over internal disputes among board members and the general manager. The district serves about 51,400 homes in Clackamas County.
In January, the Special Districts Association raised Clackamas River's insurance deductible to $50,000 and eliminated coverage for ethics and labor complaints. "All the other members in the state don't want to subsidize what's going on," explained Executive Director Frank Stratton. "I've never seen it where something is so dysfunctional."
Two months later, a Clackamas River employee filed an Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries complaint and a labor-related tort claim notice accusing the agency and Commissioners Patricia Holloway and Grafton Sterling of harassment. Those claims remain under investigation.
The board's Sept. 13 meeting ended in a wrestling match between Sterling and General Manager Lee Moore over an operations manual. Police investigated the altercation, but no citations were issued.
On Monday, Moore received a 90-day notice that the Special Districts Association didn't plan to renew the Clackamas River's insurance policy. "We're going to have to scramble to try to find replacement insurance," he said.
Board member Barbara Kemper was surprised the district lost all coverage, despite the previous warnings. She is concerned that employees might refuse to work, in case they are hurt on the job, and worried about other implications. "Our employees should not be put in a position where should something happen, they could be personally liable," she said.
The district already has started looking for new providers, but General Manager Moore is worried. When the agency looked for private liability coverage a few years ago, it didn't receive a single response. "Even back then, that was the reason we stayed with the special districts," Moore said.
The board's reputation has deteriorated further since then, as problems have become more well known and ratepayers and others have called for board members to resign. In recent months, dysfunction among board members reached a stalemate. Board member Mike Cardwell resigned in July, leaving the board deadlocked 2-2 on most issues, including the appointment of a tie-breaking replacement.
The Clackamas County Board of Commissioners, the county's top governing body, began monitoring the board this summer but has taken no action.
State law allows the county commissioners to intervene if they determine Clackamas River Water is unable to perform its duties, but officials are unsure if the agency has reached that point.
In recent weeks, county Commissioner Jim Bernard has been talking to water board members and county staff. He is encouraging the board to let the county appoint a new commissioner, if not temporarily take over management.
"For one thing, they can't afford to lose their insurance, and it just seems to me that it's blowing up," Bernard said. "It's been blowing up for a long time, but it's exploding to a point where I would hope they would ask us to help out."
However, the board members must declare an impasse if they want the county to help. So far, they can't agree on that either.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Betty White isn't the only woman of a certain, ahem, older age still thriving on television.
Jeanne Cooper is right there with her.
Cooper plays wealthy Katherine Chancellor on "The Young and the Restless," which aired its 10,000th episode Thursday. She joined the CBS soap a few months after it debuted in March 1973, and is its longest-tenured cast member.
Cooper, who turns 84 next month, shows no signs of slowing down.
She said this week: "What would I do? I'm no good at crocheting. My fingers would bleed."
Like White, who is 90, Cooper authored a book about her career titled "Not Young, Still Restless." At a recent signing, the grandmother of eight said some fans stayed the entire evening, awed at meeting the grand dame of fictional Genoa City, Wis.
"I'm very motivating for some people," said Cooper, who makes infrequent public appearances. "It's a character, as rich as she is, that has ordinary problems. If you impress one person to a better way of living, you've transferred what you should do."
Cooper recalled a recent visit to the Department of Motor Vehicles to get new plates for her car. The employee behind the counter whispered to her, "I know who you are."
"It has its perks being Mrs. Chancellor," she said, laughing, "and if I have to use it, by golly, I'll use it. I'm through standing in lines at my age."
While other soaps' ratings have dwindled or the shows have been canceled as the daytime audience has shrunk, "Y&R" has been TV's top-rated soap since December 1998. Cooper attributes its success and longevity to the writing that created likeable characters.
"That's the mainstay of the show," she said. "You've always been able to become involved, whether you were wealthy or whatever your status is, our show hit the human being."
"The Young and the Restless" will celebrate its 40th anniversary in March. New executive producer Jill Farren Phelps, who previously oversaw "General Hospital," and new head writer Josh Griffith are cooking up story lines that include the return of Jess Walton, who plays Jill, later this fall, and emotional, professional and surprising physical challenges for the Newman family.
"Jill is making it a little sharper to meet the demands of where things are today in the world of very fast films and lazy minds," Cooper said.
One of Cooper's proudest moments was when her real-life facelift was televised on the show in 1984 as her character underwent the surgery at the same time. Call it TV's first "extreme makeover" in daytime.
"It opened up reconstructive surgery for so many people, youngsters getting things done," she said. "To this day, people will come up to me and say, 'Thank you so much for doing that. My mom or I had something done, and not just cosmetic surgery.' That was an incredible experience in my life."
Unlike a lot of actors, Cooper fesses up to having had her eyes done and a slight chin tuck. Three days a week, her trainer arrives at her hilltop home in Los Angeles at 6 a.m. to put Cooper through stretching and exercises.
"Then I get my tush to work," she said in her famous throaty laugh.

Curiosity may have spent a while limbering up for the mission ahead, but now it's found evidence of an ancient streambed on Mars that once had "vigorous" water flow. Photos of two rock outcroppings taken by the rover's mast camera between the north rim of Gale Crater and the foot of Mount Sharp reveal gravel embedded into a layer of conglomerate rock. The shape of the small stones indicate to NASA JPL scientists that they were previously moved, and their size (think from grains of sand to golf balls) are a telltale sign that water did the work instead of wind. Evidence of H2O on Mars has been spotted before, but this is the first direct look at the composition of riverbeds NASA has observed from above.
According to Curiosity science co-investigator William Dietrich, it's estimated that water flowed at the site anywhere from thousands to millions of years ago, moved at a clip of roughly 3 feet per second and was somewhere between ankle and hip deep. "A long-flowing stream can be a habitable environment," Mars Science Laboratory Project Scientist John Grotzinger said. "It is not our top choice as an environment for preservation of organics, though. We're still going to Mount Sharp, but this is insurance that we have already found our first potentially habitable environment."

THE ELUSIVENESS OF ?SAFETY?
A little boy was shot and killed this evening. One block away from my home.
I live in the same community as our President.? His home is less than 8 blocks away.
Less than a mile south of me, there are federal agents guarding one home and city cops protecting one block. Yet, a little boy was still shot and killed.? Steps away from his home.? One block away from me.
There is a magnet high school four blocks to the west.? The beautiful lakefront is one block to the east.? Condos abound, historic homes and a few mansions line the streets. ?Nevertheless, a young man was still murdered and yet another life was senselessly taken.
Newly developed mixed-income housing is integrated into my community.? This is a noble concept aimed at bridging the socioeconomic and cultural gaps that have often arisen within economically and racially segregated neighborhoods in Chicago.? Tonight, I am both saddened and grateful for this integration; for the reality of violence (and the need for resolution) has hit painfully close to home.
I grieve for the young man who died but I pray for the fate of his friends, younger than the age of 15, who were left to contemplate the relevancy of his life and the magnitude of his death.
How do you convince these children that they will ever be safe?
In the absolute absence of any notion of security, how do you teach these children not to seek retaliation to protect themselves?? How do you convince these children to keep doing the right thing?? How do you convince these children there is more to life than death?? How do you help these children see a way out of the circumstances of violence that seems to creep into their lives, into their neighborhoods, and into their families no matter where they go?
?I didn?t plan to write about a kid dying.
In fact, the post I originally wrote began with the sentence, ?I can?t write about kids dying.?
Yet, here I am and here we are.
As a reader to this blog, it is not my goal to convince you to help solve this issue.? My goal is to convince you to care.
It is easy to read this story and believe that these things happen because a child did something wrong?or better yet, because a child did not do something right.? Yet, what I know to be true is that the circumstances from which one is born sets you on a specific trajectory that you have to exert an extraordinary amount of energy to deviate from.? I am convinced now, more than ever, that the outcomes for many inner city youth will not be changed unless the circumstances that they are born into changes.
TEACHERS BEGET TEACHERS, GOVERNMENT WORKERS BEGET GOVERNMENT WORKERS AND GANGBANGERS BEGET GANGBANGERS
Society tries to indoctrinate poor inner city children with the belief that they can become a doctor or a lawyer when these children have no idea how to get there and are not given the tools to figure it out.? Society tries to convince these children that in the midst of poverty, shitty schools, drugs, and violence , that all they have to do is keep doing the right thing, look twice before they cross the street, be good alter boys and eventually they will become upstanding citizens with all the benefits vested by such a bullshit title.
KIDS AREN?T AS DUMB AS WE HOPE THEY ARE.
Police and ambulance came to the scene of the shooting.? Homeowners came out of their houses.? Friends of the slain child stood by and watched.? As the children walked away, many younger than the age of 15, they were left to themselves and their own thoughts to make sense out of what happened.? ?Some will feel helpless.? Some will feel angry.? Some will turn to God.? Some will turn to retaliation.? Some will turn to drugs.? Others, if they are smart, resourceful, and lucky, will focus on getting as far away from this community and this city, one with parks, mansions, and lakefront property, as quickly as possible.
SOLUTIONS
I didn?t plan to write about a child getting shot.
Yet here I am and here we are.
I didn?t want to write another story about violence in Chicago without proposing a solution. Unfortunately, neither the story of the young man who died nor the story of how I have been impacted is anything new.? Yet, the preponderance of violence, and the need for a solution, has preoccupied my thoughts for months because more and more, as the death toll continues to rise, I am starting to suspect that the cavalry is not coming.
The ugly truth of the matter is that the rise in violence, specifically in major cities like Chicago isn?t because there are less ?good? kids or more ?bad? kids in underserved communities.? There will always be children who will succeed despite their circumstances due to an incomprehensible level of resiliency.? Likewise, I also believe that there are some people, even children, who are simply so emotionally wounded that no amount of social services, money, or help will make them whole again. Yet, those children who fall somewhere in the middle, who are vulnerable and likely to be persuaded towards doing ?right? and ?wrong? per the options that they see as most viable are the ones whose lives we must fight for.
We must create clear pathways for these children.? We must create better incentives for benchmarks that encourage success (outside of social promotions and meaningless high school graduations).
We need scalable ways to incentivize positive behavior for youth who have come to believe that it doesn?t ?pay? to do the right thing.
iPods for good grades/community service?
A xbox with the completion of a trade program?
Snitches get used cars?
I don?t know what the right mixture of incentives looks like.
Am I encouraging the bribing of non-criminal, inner city children who show potential?
Why yes, that?s exactly what I am doing.
?Because on the other side of the bribe you ?may have a student with better grades, an iPod, and a pathway to self-sufficiency instead of a child in prison or dead because they thought drug dealing was the only way to get what they wanted.
***
A little boy died tonight.
I may never know the circumstances of his death.
Yet, I will forever ponder the choices that led him to the corner where he was shot and whether there is anything that can be done to keep other children from doing the same.

There?s an important development in the global ivory wars, stemming directly from the great National Geographic article (explored on Dot Earth recently) that focused on the demand created by the market for religious icons carved from elephant tusks. A Catholic priest, whose statements about ways to illicitly ship ivory to the United States were featured in the magazine article, is being investigated by government authorities in the Philippines. Here are the details, as reported by Floyd Whaley out of Manila for The Times:
MANILA ? Philippine law enforcement officials said on Wednesday that they were investigating whether a senior priest in the Roman Catholic Church was involved in the smuggling of elephant ivory to feed country?s passion for religious icons.
The investigation was prompted by an article in the October issue of National Geographic magazine that quotes Msgr. Crist?bal Garcia, a senior church official on the central Philippine island of Cebu, as telling an American reporter how to smuggle illegal elephant ivory figurines into the United States. ?Wrap it in old, stinky underwear and pour ketchup on it,? he is quoted as saying, to deter inspection.
The Philippine National Bureau of Investigation and the country?s wildlife protection agency are investigating the claims made in the article, government officials said. [Read the rest.]

Fitness trackers, like the people they're meant for, come in plenty of shapes and sizes. The latest addition to this category of wearable devices that act essentially like pedometers, only smarter, is the petite Fitbit Zip.?Our Editors' Choice for fitness gadgets is the outstanding Fitbit Ultra, a sleek and compact device that provides a wealth of easy-to-understand information about your health. However, the company will soon retire the product and replacing it with two new options: the soon-to-be released Fitbit One, which is very similar to the Ultra except with modified look, and the tinier, lower-cost Fitbit Zip.
At $59.95 (direct), Fitbit Zip caters most to price-sensitive folks. No other good-quality fitness gadget I've seen comes in under $99, from the bracelet shaped Nike+ FuelBand ($149) to the boxy MP3-playing? Motorola MotoActv ($249.99) . If cost is your primary concern in choosing a fitness tracker, Fitbit Zip may be an ideal option.
However, given the mere $30 price difference between Zip and the new Fitbit One, I'd rather pony up for the latter. Fitbit Zip does an admirable job of counting steps taken and miles walked or run, but it lacks a few features that I think are worth the extra money. While I have not yet formally tested Fitbit One, I can safely say based on experience with Fitbit Ultra (and word from the company that functionality will be nearly identical) that the altimeter and sleep data you get with the more expensive gadget are extremely cool. Plus, Fitbit One, which I got some hands-on time with pre-release, has an even more attractive design than Ultra. The Zip, in comparison, looks a little cheap.
Design
When I say Fitbit Zip is tiny, I mean I've eaten pieces of candy bigger than this thing. It's 0.2 by 1.2 by 1.8 inches and weighs 0.3 ounces. Also included in the package are a color-coordinated rubbery case with clip, so that you can secure Fitbit Zip to your clothes, and a USB plug-in device that enables wireless syncing to your Fitbit account (more on that in the Set Up section).
This wireless activity tracker comes in five colors?white, black, lime, magenta, and blue. To me, the white and black look more sophisticated than the other sporty colors, so I opted for a white test unit.
In the center of the plastic body, a simple dot matrix display shows the time, how many steps you've walked (on a midnight-to-midnight cycle), total distance in miles, calories burned, and a happy face to reward you for staying fit. Compared with the slick Fitbit One, the Zip?s gray display looks downright schlocky.
Fitbit Zip has no buttons to press, instead relying on a simple tap to cycle through the information. The display goes to sleep when you?re not active to conserve battery power.
Set Up
Unlike most other fitness tracking devices that need to be connected by a cable to your computer and recharged every so often, Fitbit Zip is entirely wireless and runs on a watch battery, which you can replace when it dies, but should last several months.
Out of the box, you plug in the USB syncing connector into your computer, which initiates a download of the Fitbit software. You'll also see prompts to log into your Fitbit account, or create a new one if you need.
The Fitbit Web account is really the heart of the program, and it works with a number of other apps, such as Lose It! and MapMyRun, as well as physical devices for health and fitness, including the Fitbit Aria Wi-Fi Smart Scale, which automatically logs your weigh-ins to the account to track your weight effortlessly.
For all the Fitbit components to work properly, you do need to enter into the Web account your height, weight, age, and sex. All that information stays private.
With a Fitbit account set up, you can clip Fitbit Zip to your clothes or tuck it in your pocket, and go about your normal day. When you're in range of your computer with the USB stick, all your data will wirelessly upload to your Fitbit account.
Web Account Features
Fitbit Zip will keep track of the ground you cover every day, but it won't count stairs or hills that you climb any differently, as the Fitbit Ultra and One do (climbing stairs burns about four times as many calories as walking on flat surface). All this activity is uploaded to your account, where you can view intuitive graphs of your progress.
You can set up goals, like losing weight or simply taking more steps in a day, and Fitbit will keep an eye on your progress.
The Web account is comprehensive. You can manage your calorie intake by logging foods and drinks you consume, and also entering special activities in addition to walking to ensure you get credit for burning more calories. For example, if you swam three-quarters of a mile in 35 minutes while not wearing the Fitbit Zip?which is water- and sweat-resistant, but can't be worn in a pool?the Web account will computer how many additional calories you burned. Fitbit Zip only tracks walking, jogging, and running, but that's true of nearly every fitness tracker I've seen.
A journal section also appears in your account for keeping notes, as well as areas for monitoring sleep, blood pressure, and glucose if you have the appropriate devices or want to manually enter information.
The Fitbit Ultra and its successor the Fitbit One include automatic sleep tracking data, which I really enjoy seeing, but this capability didn't make it into the lower-cost Fitbit Zip.?
Should You Zip?
Miniscule, yet effective, Fitbit Zip certainly does meet the needs of anyone looking for a good quality fitness tracker at an affordable price. But seeing as you only have to shell out an extra $30 for the upcoming Fitbit One, which will replace Fitbit Ultra (our Editors' Choice), the added cost seems worth it. Fitbit Zip doesn't look as sharp as the Fitbit One, nor does it track your sleep or give you credit for additional calories burned when you climb stairs. And with any of the Fitbit devices, you get the same great Web account for free. The Fitbit Zip might make sense if you're unsure of your commitment to using a fitness tracker in the first place, but for everyone else, I recommend spending just a little more for the Fitbit One.?
