CINCINNATI (AP) -- Rickie Weeks and Cody Ransom each hit two-run homers yesterday to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to an 8-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds. Milwaukee starter Zack Greinke remained unbeaten against the Reds, allowing two runs in six innings. Reds starter Homer Bailey fell to 0-5 in 10 games against the Brewers.

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Reds manager Dusty Baker made sure closer Aroldis Chapman won't be doing any more somersaults after finishing a game. Chapman did a pair of somersaults after closing out Tuesday night's win over the Milwaukee Brewers. Baker talked to Chapman about his antics and said yesterday it will never happen again.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- The Houston Rockets traded veteran center Samuel Dalembert to the Milwaukee Bucks on the eve of the NBA draft. The Bucks received Dalembert, the 14th overall pick in today's draft, a future second-round pick and cash considerations. In exchange, Houston received forwards Jon Brockman and Jon Leuer, guard Shaun Livingston and the No. 12 pick in today's draft.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Former Milwaukee Bucks forward Pat Cummings has died at the age of 55. Authorities say Cummings was found dead on Tuesday in a New York apartment. Cummings was drafted by Milwaukee in 1978 after being selected Metro Conference Player of the Year at Cincinnati.

Scientists develop a spray-on battery

Scientists in the United States have developed a paint that can store and deliver electrical power just like a battery.?

Traditional lithium-ion batteries power most portable electronics. They are already pretty compact but limited to rectangular or cylindrical blocks.

Researchers at Rice University in Houston, Texas, have come up with a technique to break down each element of the traditional battery and incorporate it into a liquid that can be spray-painted in layers on virtually any surface.

"This means traditional packaging for batteries has given way to a much more flexible approach that allows all kinds of new design and integration possibilities for storage devices," said Pulickel Ajayan, who leads the team on the project.

The rechargeable battery is made from spray-painted layers, with each representing the components of a traditional battery: two current collectors, a cathode, an anode and a polymer separator in the middle.?

The paint layers were airbrushed onto ceramics, glass and stainless steel, and on diverse shapes such as the curved surface of a ceramic mug, to test how well they bond.

One limitation of the technology is in the use of difficult-to-handle liquid electrolytes and the need for a dry and oxygen-free environment when making the new device.?

The researchers are looking for components that would allow construction in the open air for a more efficient production process and greater commercial viability.

Neelam Singh, who worked on the project, believes the technology could be integrated with solar cells to give any surface a stand-alone energy capture and storage capability.

The researchers tested the device using nine bathroom tiles coated with the paint and connected to each other. When they were charged, the batteries powered a set of light-emitting diodes for six hours, providing a steady 2.4 volts.

The results of the study were published on Thursday in the journal Nature Scientific Reports.?

Ex-military chief to head asylum seeker task force

Prime Minister Julia Gillard has confirmed that the former Defence Chief, Angus Houston, will head the three person group tasked to find a solution to the ongoing asylum seeker issue in Australia.

The asylum seeker debate has dominated Australian politics in the last week.

The debate over how to deal with the increasing rate of asylum seekers arriving in Australia has steadily fuelled political debate in recent months but the issue came to a head this week when a second boat carrying 134 passengers capsized on its way to Australia, less than a week after another boat carrying an estimated 200 capsized, killing as many as 90 people.

Both the governing Labor Party and the opposing Coalition have their own policies to address the problem but as both also strongly oppose the others', a political deadlock has remained in place since talks broke down in January.

Both parties want to use offshore processing as a deterrent to potential asylum seekers but disagree on the location; the government want to do it in Malaysia, the opposition in Nauru. The Coalition opposes the government's proposal as Malaysia hasn't signed the UN's Refugee Convention while the government claims parts?of the Coalition's proposal, such as temporary protection visas and escorting asylum seeking boats out of Australian waters, are cruel and unnecessary.

However, with the threat of another tragedy just one week after one of the worst in recent memory, it looked as though a compromise had been reached when independent MP Rob Oakeshott's bill, which would permit sections of both parties' proposals, scraped through a vote in the House of Representatives.

The bill's passing was hailed as a victory for Ms Gillard but Leader of the Opposition Tony Abbott promised it would not make it through the Senate. Mr Abbott's prediction came true when the bill was heavily defeated after a lengthy and emotional debate and bringing the issue back to a lurching halt.

Ms Gillard expressed her disappointment at the vote and once again took the opportunity to criticise Mr Abbott for the resumed stalemate but announced she would form a three person panel to investigate all possible solutions to the problem.

The panel, which will have access to all policy recommendations and alternatives proposed by all parties, will include former Department of Foreign Affairs chief Michael L'Estrange and Paris Aristotle, a renowned advocate for refugees. The panel will be headed by Angus Houston, who was a member of the Australian Air Force for over 40 years, serving as Chief of the Defence Force until July, 2011.

Ms Gillard said the panel will be free to seek advice from any charity or non-government organisation?as well as?any governmental department or politician; the group will report back to her and the public after the six week winter recess parliament has just begun is over.

Both parties risk having their own proposals scuttled by the group yet Ms Gillard says the urgency of issue requires an unbiased approach towards finding a solution.

"I am asking eminent Australians of huge capacity to apply their intellect, their judgement, to this question and to provide a public report," said the prime minister upon announcing the formation of the group.

"I would only be doing that if I think their views are of the utmost significance."

The prime minister may be prepared to heed the group's advice but did not promise to abandon her own preferred solution should the group reject it.

Mr Abbott has been careful not to insult the prominent members of the group but has accused Ms Gillard of 'outsourcing' duties which she has ultimate responsibility.

"Over the next six weeks, the prime minister can do nothing or she can do something," said Mr Abbott, who urged the prime minister to "get cracking with building those centres at Nauru and PNG.

"If legislation really is needed to do that, that legislation will be passed by the parliament as soon as it comes back in August but this committee is not a solution, this is outsourcing the prime ministership."

BETHESDA, Md. (AP) ? Bo Van Pelt holed out from the fairway for eagle and kept bogeys off his card for a 4-under 67. It gave him a one-shot lead Thursday in the AT&T National, which felt more like a U.S. Open than Congressional did last year.

Only seven players managed to post scores in the 60s, and the average score was about 73.5.

Tiger Woods didn't play the U.S. Open last year. Even so, the course was far stronger than when he last won here in 2009. Woods was never under par in the opening round and had to settle for a 72.

Vijay Singh, Brendon De Jonge and Jimmy Walker were at 68, while Pat Perez, Jason Day and Navy veteran Billy Hurley III were at 69.

Microorganisms in the human gastrointestinal tract form an intricate, living fabric made up of some 500 to 1000 distinct bacterial species, (in addition to other microbes). Recently, researchers have begun to untangle the subtle role these diverse life forms play in maintaining health and regulating weight.

In a new study appearing in the journal Nutrition in Clinical Practice, researcher Rosa Krajmalnik-Brown and her colleagues at the Swette Center for Environmental Biotechnology at Arizona State University?s Biodesign Institute in collaboration with John DiBaise from the Division of Gastroenterology at the Mayo Clinic, review the role of gut microbes in nutrient absorption and energy regulation.

According to Krajmalnik-Brown, ?Malnutrition may manifest as either obesity or undernutrition, problems of epidemic proportion worldwide. Microorganisms have been shown to play an important role in nutrient and energy extraction and energy regulation although the specific roles that individual and groups/teams of gut microbes play remain uncertain.?

The study outlines the growth of varied microbial populations ? from birth onwards ? highlighting their role in extracting energy from the diet. The composition of microbial communities is shown to vary with age, body weight, and variety of food ingested; as well as in response to bariatric surgery for obesity, use of antibiotics and many other factors.

Based on current findings, the authors suggest that therapeutic modification of the gut microbiome may offer an attractive approach to future treatment of nutrition-related maladies, including obesity and a range of serious health consequences linked to under-nutrition.

Micromanagers

The microbes in the human gut belong to three broad domains, defined by their molecular phylogeny: Eukarya, Bacteria, and Achaea. Of these, bacteria reign supreme, with two dominant divisions ? known as Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes ? making up over 90 percent of the gut?s microbial population. In contrast, the Achaea that exist in the gut are mostly composed of methanogens (producers of methane) and specifically by Methanobrevibacter smithii ? a hydrogen-consumer.

Within the bacterial categories however, enormous diversity exists. Each individual?s community of gut microbes is unique and profoundly sensitive to environmental conditions, beginning at birth. Indeed, the mode of delivery during the birthing process has been shown to affect an infant?s microbial profile.

Communities of vaginal microbes change during pregnancy in preparation for birth, delivering beneficial microbes to the newborn. At the time of delivery, the vagina is dominated by a pair of bacterial species, Lactobacillus and Prevotella. In contrast, infants delivered by caesarean section typically show microbial communities associated with the skin, including Staphylococcus, Corynebacterium, and Propionibacterium. While the full implications of these distinctions are still murky, evidence suggests they may affect an infant?s subsequent development and health, particularly in terms of susceptibility to pathogens.

Diet and destiny

After birth, diet becomes a critical determinant in microbial diversity within the gut. Recent research indicates that microbial populations vary geographically in a manner consistent with regional differences in diet. Children in rural areas of Burkina Faso for example showed much more abundant concentrations of Bacteroidetes compared with their cohorts in Italy, a finding consistent with the African children?s plant-rich diet.

While microbiomes appear to have adapted to local diets, changes in eating habits significantly alter composition of gut microbes. Variations in macronutrient composition can modify the structure of gut microbiota in a few days ? in some cases, a single day. Studies in mice show that changing from a low fat, plant polysaccharide diet to a Western diet high in sugar and fat rapidly and profoundly reconfigures the composition of microbes in the gut.

Another modifier of gut microbe composition is gastric bypass surgery, used in certain cases to alleviate conditions of serious obesity. In earlier work, the authors found that the post-surgical microbial composition of patients who underwent so-called Roux-en-Y gastric bypass was distinct from both obese and normal weight individuals.

?Obesity affects more than a third of adults in the U.S. and is associated with a raft of health conditions including heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain forms of cancer,? says Dr. John DiBaise. The authors further note that concentrations in the blood of lipopolysaccharides derived from gut bacteria increase in obese individuals, producing a condition known as metabolic endotoxemia. The disorder has been linked with chronic, systemic, low-level inflammation as well as insulin resistance.

Energy harvest

In the current review, the cycle of microbial energy extraction from food, involving hydrogen-producing and consuming reactions in the human intestine, is described in detail. Short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are a critical component in this system. During the digestive process, fermentation in the gut breaks down complex organic compounds, producing SCFA and hydrogen. The hydrogen is either excreted in breath or consumed by 3 groups of microorganisms inhabiting the colon: methanogens, acetogens and sulfate reducers.

Research conducted by the authors and others has demonstrated that hydrogen-consuming methanogens appear in greater abundance in obese as opposed to normal weight individuals. Further, the Firmicutes ? a form of acetogen ? also seem to be linked with obesity. Following fermentation, SCFAs persist in the colon. Greater concentration of SCFAs, especially propionate, were observed in fecal samples from obese as opposed to normal weight children. (SCFAs also behave as signaling molecules, triggering the expression of leptin, which acts as an appetite suppressor.)

While it now seems clear that certain microbial populations help the body process otherwise indigestible carbohydrates and proteins, leading to greater energy extraction and associated weight gain, experimental results have shown some inconsistency. For example, while a number of studies have indicated a greater prevalence of Bacteroidetes in lean individuals and have linked the prevalence of Firmicutes with obesity, the authors stress that many questions remain.

Alterations in gut microbiota are also of crucial concern for the one billion people worldwide who suffer from undernutrition. Illnesses resulting from undernutrition contribute to over half of the global fatalities in children under age 5. Those who do survive undernutrition often experience a range of serious, long-term mental and physical effects. The role of gut microbial diversity among the undernourished has yet to receive the kind of concentrated research effort applied to obesity ? a disease which has reached epidemic proportions in the developed world.

Exploiting microbes affecting energy extraction may prove a useful tool for non-surgically addressing obesity as well as treating undernutrition, though more research is needed for a full understanding of regulatory mechanisms governing the delicate interplay between intestinal microbes and their human hosts.

Dr. Krajmalnik-Brown and colleagues at the Biodesign Institute and Mayo Clinic are currently in the second year of an NIH-funded study to better understand the role of the gut microbiome in the success or failure of surgical procedures performed to treat obesity including the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, adjustable gastric band and vertical sleeve gastrectomy.

Google Adds Movie Purchases, TV Shows, And Magazines To Google Play

The Google Play store already had thousands of movies for rent, as well as millions of songs from major labels available for purchase. It also had a pretty extensive collection of e-books -- the largest in the industry, Google claims. But it's bringing even more content to its Google Play store, with the added availability of movie purchases, TV shows, and magazines on Android devices. That includes the ability to purchase movies -- not just rent them -- and have them available whenever users want to view them. In addition to movies, Google Play is adding TV shows, allowing users to purchase individual episodes or even full seasons of their favorite shows. While e-books have been popular, Google Play didn't previously offer access to magazine titles, but it's changing that through partnerships with some major magazine publishers.
