Authorities: TSA agents rescued kidnapped woman

TSA agents in Miami, Fla. say they rescued a woman, who they believe was kidnapped and allegedly beaten by two women, before she was forced onto a plane. WTVJ's Willard Shepard reports.

By Willard Shepard, NBCMiami.com

A woman who was beaten, kidnapped and brought to Miami International Airport by her assailants could have been forced to fly with them to New York, but two alert Transportation Security Administration agents noticed that something was wrong, authorities said.

In airport surveillance video obtained exclusively by NBC 6 South Florida, the victim is seen arriving at the terminal on July 5. She wore a scarf around her face to conceal the injuries sustained in an alleged beating, authorities said.

Two Miami Transportation Security Administration officers said they detected something was wrong with her.

Read the original story on NBCMiami.com.

??When she came closer I realized she was black and blue on both sides of her face, her forehead. I noticed her shoulder looked like she had a big rug burn,? said a TSA officer named Ray, who did not want to use his full name nor show his face on television for security reasons. ?Later on I found out from her that they had dragged her across the floor.?

She looked afraid, said another TSA officer, Danielle, who also did not want to be fully identified.

The fear came from a beating the woman took inside a fifth-floor room at the Best Western hotel in North Miami, police said. Detectives said the woman came to South Florida with a group on vacation -- but it turned to a nightmare when one woman accused the victim having an intimate relationship with her boyfriend. She was then beaten and kidnapped, North Miami Police said.

She was forced to go to the bank and withdraw funds, threatened, and taken to the airport for a flight back to New Jersey, police said.

That's when the two TSA officers, who are trained to detect suspicious behavior that could be an indicator of a terrorist attack, used those skills to save the woman as she was about to go through the security checkpoint.

"The way that she was acting, we actually thought it was a case of an abduction because she looked very young,? Danielle said.

Her partner approached her and asked her to come with them, Danielle added.

?She told us basically to help her and to take her away from the people that she was traveling with,? Danielle said.

Other officers then stepped in to detain four individuals, two women and two men.

Melissa Pineiro is charged with kidnapping, robbery, false imprisonment and battery, and Tori Beato is charged with kidnapping, false imprisonment, battery and theft. They are pleading not guilty, have both bonded out of jail and will be back in Miami-Dade court Aug. 6, according to court records.

The two men were released.

?I believe we saved her life that day,? Ray said of the victim. ?According to her, she told us they threatened to kill her if she told anybody.?

The head of TSA security at MIA says that its program looking at someone?s behavior -- which when first installed caused some people to be concerned about their privacy -- assisted in bringing this woman to safety.

?In the course of their duty, they did what they were trained to do,? said Mark Hadfield, the agency?s director at MIA. ?They saw stress, they saw fear, and it turned out that this woman was in really dire danger.?

ACLU wants to know how license plate data is used

(AP) ? The American Civil Liberties Union is asking police agencies nationwide for details on how they store data captured by automatic license plate readers, which authorities say help fight crime and terrorism and are not used to stockpile information on all drivers.

A top concern, the ACLU says, is how long the location and movements of people are kept on file after cameras mounted on patrol cars or along roads on telephone poles and bridges photograph license plates. ACLU affiliates in 38 states and the District of Columbia have joined in asking for the information.

"The American people have a right to know whether our police departments are using these tools in a limited and responsible manner, or whether they are keeping records of our movements for months or years for no good reason," said Catherine Crump, staff attorney with the ACLU's Speech, Privacy and Technology Project.

In Maryland, state police keep data from the license plate readers for 24 hours, said Greg Shipley, a police spokesman. Then, the information is forwarded to the Maryland Coordination and Analysis Center, or "fusion center," where local, state and federal authorities work side by side to root out terrorism plots. The data can be kept there for up to a year unless a law enforcement need has been demonstrated in a legal case, said Maryland Assistant U.S. Attorney Harvey Eisenberg, coordinator of the Maryland Anti-Terrorism Advisory Council, which oversees the fusion center.

Officials are trying to strike a legitimate balance in preserving information, and storing the data is no different than preserving evidence in other legal cases, Eisenberg said.

"It's just a much more efficient and effective way to do that," Eisenberg said.

The ACLU said that while the use of the technology is growing around the nation, too little is known about how long the data can be stored.

"The concern is about 'Big Brother' and police potentially maintaining large databases about where innocent citizens drive every day," said Dane Claussen, executive director the ACLU office in Las Vegas.

The ACLU of Nevada is filing requests seeking records from some of the state's largest law enforcement agencies, including Las Vegas Metropolitan, Reno and Henderson city police and the Washoe County sheriff, Claussen said.

In Henderson, outside Las Vegas, city police reported success shortly after installing mobile license plate scanners in several marked patrol vehicles in June 2011. The first case involved an officer driving on a busy boulevard identifying a Chevrolet pickup as having been reported stolen in Las Vegas.

Henderson police spokesman Keith Paul said Monday his agency had not yet been asked by the ACLU for information.

In New Mexico, license plate readers are installed at the five points of entry where commercial truckers stop when they pass through the state. The readers check the truck's license plate and tap into government crime, safety and tax databases.

State inspectors are provided with information on whether the license plate is wanted in connection with a crime, according to New Mexico State Police Chief Robert Shilling. Inspectors also get real-time reports on the safety records of the trucking company and the individual truck, and whether state road taxes have been paid.?The information is retained by the Department of Public Safety for six months and then deleted, Shilling said.

"We don't use it except for criminal justice purposes," said Shilling.

Vernon Herron, a retired commander of the Maryland State Police, said law enforcement's focus is on solving crimes, not storing piles of data for the sake of compiling information. The cameras have been instrumental in significant reductions in auto thefts and locating missing children through Amber Alerts, said Herron, who is now a policy analyst for the Center for Health and Homeland Security at the University of Maryland, Baltimore.

"It has been very successful in returning kids to their families," said Herron, who worked for 27 years with the Maryland State Police and as public safety director for Prince George's County. In that county, auto thefts were cut by about 40 percent in two years with the help of the cameras.

What The Experts Aren't Telling You About Internet Marketing

Posted on July 29th, 2012 Web Doctor

Many people are making significant extra cash by working with Internet marketing. However, as we all know, starting a business doesn?t mean that the business is going to do well. There?s a lot that goes into marketing an online business if you want to be successful. Read this article to find out more about Internet marketing and getting started.

Good content is the very source of a successful Internet marketing strategy. Go over your content often to see if you?re getting any reaction from your customers, whether it?s good or bad. Have others read over your content. Get an honest opinion about what you are writing. Lastly, be sure to check your spelling and grammar for any errors.

There are internet marketing services that can be of assistance in internet marketing, but do try to learn the basics on your own. Auto responders, creating mailing lists, and mass mailers are all easy steps once you familiarize yourself with the basics. Anything you learn might turn out to be useful late on as you develop your Internet marketing strategy further.

Insert rich and original content into your site. Search engines will notice the rich content as well as the uniqueness of your offerings, and visitors will want to keep coming back to see what you have added that no other website offers.

Try taking advantage of searches using images. If you put images that are relevant to your niche you can get more hits than if someone was searching for text only. People who are just trying to find pictures might end up on your site and look around. Once they have been to your site and are familiar with your brand, they are more apt to visit again in the future.

Include a chat feature on your site so that visitors can meet each other there. This helps your site feel like a group or club instead of simply a place to purchase items. People like to belong to groups, and giving them a reason to think of your business as a group will make them stay around much longer.

Present limited time offers. This could mean providing free shipping or free gift wrapping for any purchases made prior to a given date. An effective sense of urgency should be created by making the offer?s end date clear.

Whatever you put in your ads, be sure you can back it up. A large percentage of Internet users are wary of online claims. Testimonials, results of studies, along with great references and guarantees help to ensure a sense of credibility. Claims offered on their own, lacking any sort of support, can actually hurt your business instead of help it.

Use a succinct caption and an accurate description for all the images on your website. Search engines use captions to help determine if a site is relevant to a user?s search. With good captions on your images, your site can raise in search engine rankings.

Always try to keep your content fresh and current on your website. Visitors who arrive at a site and find that the latest information available was posted months or even years ago are going to draw the wrong conclusions about your business?s current state of affairs. Readers are attracted to a website that is updated frequently and easy to use.

{Make use of promotions to entice visitors to your site. Try offering discounted e-books for a couple days. Your site will attract more visitors, who will see your other products and services while they are stopping by to pick up their promo item. They may leave with more than just the e-book if they find something else of interest on your site.

~Design your banners to be subtle and not annoying to visitors to your website. Use banners that are links to click on to get to more content. Many people may not click on banners typically, but putting links to desirable content will lure them to click.

~A good marketing tool is to offer a free gift or some other incentive to your customers after they make a purchase, as a way of saying thanks. Sometimes, it is easy to overlook simple things such as this, but offering freebies can keep customers coming back.

~Give your customers the appearance that they are in complete control of the content being delivered. This is important today in a marketing world full of spam and unwanted opinions. Make it clear that their participating is optional in order to boost your credibility.

~Titles are important when it comes to respectability. Crown yourself CEO if you have a company. Even non-owners can add that extra dash of importance by using a creative title. End communications with your signature and your title

60 jobs at Cumbrian defence depot ?safe?, says union

Unions at Longtown munitions depot believe that 60 of the 300 jobs at risk there are safe.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) had proposed closing the site, known as Defence Storage and Distribution Agency Longtown, in 2014, transferring its explosive-storage function to Kineton in Warwickshire.

The trade union Prospect is campaigning against closure. It believes that the box task ? checking and upgrading used ammunition boxes ? will be retained.

The union stumbled across the information in the MoD?s investment appraisal for the site.

Neil Scott, Prospect section secretary, said: ?When we digested the investment appraisal we noticed that the box task had been excluded.

?While we are delighted that at least 60 jobs will remain, we were shocked to find out this way. This is a major change to their project. They are not pulling out completely.

?The whole project has changed from closure to withdrawal of the explosive function.?

The MoD told the News & Star that the box task may stay at Longtown, even if the rest of the depot closes, but that a final decision has yet to be made.

A spokesman said: ?A study is underway to determine the most effective and value for money approach to providing the box task after March 2014, when current arrangements task expire. The Longtown head of establishment and trades unions are being kept fully informed during the study process and the report is scheduled to be available later this year.?

Meanwhile, the fight to save all 300 jobs at the depot goes on.

Defence Minister Peter Luff has the final say.

He is due to visit the site on August 14 and is expected to announce his decision in September.

AP sources: Key role for Clinton at Dem convention

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Former President Bill Clinton will have a marquee role in this summer's Democratic National Convention, where he will make a forceful case for President Barack Obama's re-election and his economic vision for the country, several Obama campaign and Democratic party officials said Sunday.

The move gives the Obama campaign an opportunity to take advantage of the former president's immense popularity and remind voters that a Democrat was in the White House the last time the American economy was thriving.

Obama personally asked Clinton to speak at the convention and place Obama's name in nomination, and Clinton enthusiastically accepted, officials said. Clinton speaks regularly to Obama and to campaign officials about strategy.

Clinton's prominent role at the convention will also allow Democrats to embrace party unity in a way that is impossible for Republican rival Mitt Romney.

George W. Bush, the last Republican to hold the White House, remains politically toxic in some circles. While Bush has endorsed Romney, he is not involved in his campaign and has said he does not plan to attend the GOP convention.

Clinton will speak in prime-time at the Democratic convention in Charlotte, N.C., on Sept. 5, the night before Obama formally accepts the party nomination. While the number two on the ticket often speaks that night, the Obama campaign has instead decided that Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will speak on the same night.

Biden will introduce Obama on Sept. 6 before more than 70,000 people expected to fill an outdoor stadium in Charlotte, and millions more on television.

The vice president's speech will focus on outlining many of the challenges the White House has faced over the past four years and the decisions Obama made to address them, officials said.

"To us it's about deploying our assets in the most effective way," Obama campaign strategist David Axelrod said. "To have President Clinton on Wednesday night laying out the choice facing voters, and then having Vice President Biden speak right before the president in prime time on Thursday, giving a testimony to the decisions the president has made, the character of his leadership and the battle to rebuild the middle class that's so central to our message."

Clinton's role at the convention was to be formally announced Monday. It was first reported by The New York Times.

Clinton spoke at the 2008 convention, part of a healing process for the Democratic party following the heated primary battle between Obama and the former president's wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Since then, the ties between Obama and Bill Clinton have strengthened significantly. Obama has called on the former president for advice several times during his term and the two have appeared together this year at campaign fundraisers for Obama's re-election bid.

Greystripe: Mobile shoppers more valuable than in-store - Research ...

That price sensitivity means mobile buyers may purchase a higher-price item even if a lower price tag is attached to a similar product.

"As the mobile channel has evolved and becomes more widely accessible and easier to use, shoppers who are making purchases via their devices are exhibiting behaviors that characterize them as more profitable, more influential and more likely to buy when given an interface that is easy to use," said Kurt Hawks, general manager at Greystripe. "Based on the results of this study, retailers and retail brands that are not already focusing heavily on the mobile channel would be wise to move in that direction."

    Other interesting findings include:

? 49% of mobile shoppers regularly write product reviews compared to 31% of trad shoppers
? 37% of mobile shoppers visit a brand's website when seeking product information
? 54% are likely to mobile devices to get product details; 58% of trad shoppers compare prices via mobile
? Mobile shoppers are more likely to buy when the purchase process is simple

According to Greystripe 51% of mobile shoppers 'prefer buying' via app while 49% prefer making purchases through a website. App stores, by the way, make it simple for mobile consumers to find new games, movies or music; just over half (52%) of mobile respondents say they've made an entertainment type purchase through a mobile device.

Apps for speech therapy: Category Apps

    ?

Category Carousel: This app was developed by speech pathologist Lois Kam Heymann. The app offers nine general categories: transportation, animals, clothing, food, occupations, household, summer, winter and instruments. There are subcategories within animals (birds, bugs, farm, water, jungle, forest), transportation (land, water, sky), clothing (body, head, feet), food (breakfast, desserts, drinks, meat, fruit, vegetables), and household (cleaning, furniture, toys, tools, bathroom, kitchen). The screen for each category presents 12 photographs of items within the category selected. The child needs to drag each of the pictures into the category icon at the top of the screen. Each picture touched is named and when it is dragged into the icon two things happen: the number of items placed into the icon are counted and shown with a number and there is verbal praise. I like the large variety of items presented for some categories. For the categories with many pictures, each time a picture is placed in the icon, new picture appears on the screen so that there are always 12 pictures from which to select until the picture limit is reached. Some categories, such as winter, have only 12 pictures. One has the option of rotating the pictures on the screen by tapping the circular arrows at the bottom.

Although the focus of this app is categories there really is no challenge for the child in this respect. This is because the child does not need to determine the category nor sort pictures according to their categories. The challenge only occurs when the child needs to sort pictures into their subcategories. This app, however, is a good choice for vocabulary learning.

    Ages: 3-8
    Ratings: +++
    Developer website: pocketslp.com
    Cost: $9.99

Clean Up Category Sorting: This app focuses on three catgories---foods, toys, and clothing. An item appears on the screen. It is named and the? narrator asks, ?Where does/do the _____go?? The child plays the game by dragging the ?item into either a shopping cart, toy bin, or clothes closet at the bottom of the screen. This limits the learning of categories to three: food, toys, and clothes. A correct answer elicits a positive narrator response such as ?Yah,? ?Way to Go,? or clapping accompanied by a fleeting visual reward of either thumbs up, blue ribbon, star, confetti, or balloons. After all the items have been placed, a score screen shows the percentage correct for the session. There is no database for storing the scores of the children who use the app. This app can also be used for vocabulary building.

Lacking any creative elements, this app is basic and bland. The items that appear on the screen are photos common to the paper materials that have been around for years.

    Ages: 2-4

Prosecutors ask to meet Jung in Avon bribe probe: report

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Federal prosecutors looking into possible bribery of foreign officials by Avon Products Inc have asked to speak to Andrea Jung, the former chief executive and current full-time chairman, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday.

Prosecutors reached out to Jung through her lawyer, Theodore Wells Jr., a defense attorney at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP whom she hired in recent weeks, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter.

An Avon spokeswoman declined to comment. Wells Jr. and a spokeswoman for Paul Weiss were not immediately available for comment.

In 2008, Avon disclosed it had opened an internal inquiry into whether its China business had violated the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), which bars U.S. firms and others from paying bribes to officials of foreign governments.

The Securities and Exchange Commission is also probing Avon's China activities for potential violations of the FCPA, which requires companies to keep accurate books and records.

Prosecutors' specific reason for speaking to Jung could not be determined, the WSJ reported.

Former Avon executives have faced interviews by prosecutors for more than a year. No charges have been brought, the report said.

    Astros lose 11th straight

    By KRISTIE RIEKEN

    updated 10:44 p.m. ET July 27, 2012

HOUSTON (AP) - , Drew Sutton scored on a wild pitch in the ninth inning to propel the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 6-5 win over the hapless Houston Astros on Friday night.

The loss was Houston's 11th straight, tying the franchise record for most consecutive losses in a season. The Astros, who have baseball's worst record, (34-67) last lost 11 straight in 1995. They have lost 24 of their last 26 games.

The Astros led 5-4 entering the ninth inning before rookie Starling Marte's bases-loaded sacrifice fly tied it up. A pitch from Xavier Cedeno got away from catcher Chris Snyder and allowed Sutton to score and extend Houston's misery.

It was the third time in the last four games that Houston has lost after entering the ninth inning with a lead.

Tony Watson (5-1) pitched a scoreless eighth for the win and Joel Hanrahan did the same in the ninth for his 31st save.

Alex Presley hit a solo home run for Pittsburgh in the fourth and Michael McKenry, who finished with three hits, connected on a two-run shot in the fifth.

Houston's Chris Johnson came a single short of the cycle and Ben Francisco had a solo homer and drove in two runs for the Astros.

The game was tied at 4-all when Johnson tripled on a ball that rolled up the corner of Tal's Hill in center field with no outs in the seventh. J.D. Martinez's one-out grounder to left field sent Johnson home to put Houston on top.

Johnson doubled in the first inning and had a solo homer in the third before his seventh-inning triple. Johnson walked in the fifth inning, but struck out in his last at-bat in the eighth.

Rhiner Cruz (1-1) came in for Houston with one out in the ninth inning. McKenry singled before Cruz issued consecutive walks to load the bases before Marte's sacrifice fly off Cedeno.

Houston starter Jordan Lyles allowed seven hits and four runs while tying a career-high with eight strikeouts in 6-plus innings.

McKenry doubled to start the seventh inning and chase Lyles. McKenry advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt before tying it at 4-4 on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Josh Harrison.

Pedro Alvarez singled to start the fifth before McKenry's shot to the Crawford Boxes in left field got the Pirates within 4-3.

Francisco hit the third straight single for the Astros in the second inning to drive in a run and put Houston up 1-0.

The Astros added a run in that inning when Justin Maxwell scored on a sacrifice bunt by Lyles. The ball dribbled slightly down the right field line on the play and catcher McKenry came out to grab it. Maxwell evaded his tag and then dived onto home plate to extend the lead to 2-0.

Johnson homered for the second straight game to leave Houston up 3-0 in the third inning.

The Pirates didn't get a hit until Presley's home run to right field with one out in the fourth inning made it 3-1.

Francisco's first home run as an Astro came to start Houston's fourth inning.

Pittsburgh starter Jeff Karstens yielded six hits and four runs with seven strikeouts in five innings. He allowed two home runs on Friday night after allowing just one in his previous eight starts this season.

The Astros had a chance to add to their lead when Karstens loaded the bases with three walks in the fifth inning, but he retired Francisco to escape the jam.

Astros reliever Wesley Wright had a busy eighth inning. He got the first out of the inning, before moving to right field while Wilton Lopez came on to pitch to Andrew McCutchen. Wright, who appeared in right field for the second time in his career, returned to the mound after a double by McCutchen and retired the next two batters to end the inning.

NOTES: The Pirates have homered in 17 straight road games. ... The Astros claimed RHP Chuckie Fick off waivers from St. Louis on Friday. ... Mike Scott, who won the Cy Young award with the Astros in 1986, threw out the first pitch on Friday night as part of the team's 50th anniversary celebration. ... Wandy Rodriguez, who was traded from the Astros to the Pirates on Tuesday, will start against his former team on Saturday in the third game of the four-game series.

Shame On You, Mr. President | Western Free Press

Throughout my life, I have always felt that I could easily read or hear something, think about how I felt about what I had read or heard, put it in its proper place in my life, and then move on. I believe that people can become so bogged down with the issues, statements, accusations and passion of current events that it all becomes overwhelming to the average person.

Over this last week, few things have weighed so heavily on my mind as the President making this statement about business owners owing their success to someone else.

    President Obama:

?There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me ? because they want to give something back. They know they didn?t ? look, if you?ve been successful, you didn?t get there on your own. You didn?t get there on your own. I?m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something ? there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there.

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you?ve got a business ? you didn?t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn?t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet. ?WhiteHouse.gov:

I just can?t seem to get this out of my thoughts. I have worked for years in the construction industry. As a business owner, I don?t ask for any government handouts. I ask only to be given the opportunity to do my job and earn a living for myself, my family, and the employees I have hired over the past 28 years of my career.

President Obama and others like him are anointed by the two political parties and are carried very quickly from ??Young Rising Star? to ?Rich Rising Star.? I have often remarked that it is amazing how President Clinton left office in debt up to his ears from legal problems and now is not just wealthy, but mega-wealthy. Where did all the money come from? Did he build a business? Well you might say so, the business of politics. ?Where did President Obama get all of his money? He was but a poor young man from Hawaii. Did he make all of that money from a couple of books? Did he build a business? Like President Clinton, you can say yes again?the business of politics.

Small business owners like me get up each day and think about employees? salaries, payroll taxes, income taxes, insurance, regulations, license, collecting what is owed to us and paying what is owed to suppliers. We mortgage our homes and more often than not use credit cards to pay suppliers. We beg our banks for money knowing all along we won?t get it. All the while we smile with confidence and hope there will be another customer who is ready to buy our products or services.

We are the people our president is referring to. According to his own words, we are the people who should be grateful to the government, the firemen, the policemen and the teachers for our success.

I respect all of the firemen, policemen and teachers as well as appreciate the roads and bridges my taxes have helped to build. However, they do not sit on a pedestal in my mind and they are not the reason I have or have not been successful. I am the reason I have or have not been successful. I am the one without a guaranteed pension or future retirement unless I plan for it. Business owners like me are the ones who must make our own way on our own with no guarantees or public money. That is what we have chosen to do with our lives and careers. We ask nothing from government and we should owe the government the same ? nothing.

    Shame on you Mr. President.

Zack Greinke traded from Brewers to Angels

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) ? The Los Angeles Angels made their latest big move Friday, acquiring ace pitcher Zack Greinke from the Milwaukee Brewers for rookie shortstop Jean Segura and two minor leaguers.

By winning the sweepstakes for Greinke, perhaps the most-prized arm available before Tuesday's trade deadline, the aggressive Angels followed up a huge offseason highlighted by the big-money signings of free-agent stars Albert Pujols and C.J. Wilson.

"It should be fun. They are a great team," Greinke said in Milwaukee when the deal was completed. "After the first month of the season, they have been one of the best teams in baseball. There is a lot of talent there. A lot of great players. The pitching staff will be pretty incredible."

Greinke joins an outstanding rotation that includes fellow All-Stars Jered Weaver, Dan Haren, Wilson and Ervin Santana, who has struggled badly this season. The Angels began the day five games behind first-place Texas in the AL West but in position for a wild card.

"It's an exciting day," first-year general manager Jerry Dipoto said. "We hope that this move will be not just a short-term gain, but one that's good for the organization. We're excited to see what kind of a difference he can make."

The rival Rangers were among several teams thought to be pursuing Greinke, along with the Braves and White Sox. To land him, Los Angeles also sent Double-A right-handers Ariel Pena and Johnny Hellweg to Milwaukee.

"I tried to narrow it down to four or five teams and then as we moved on zeroed in on three teams and then it got down to two teams at the end," Milwaukee general manager Doug Melvin said. "We had two good offers. It was very close between the two teams at the end."

Greinke, the 2009 AL Cy Young Award winner, is 9-3 with a 3.44 ERA in 21 starts this season. The 28-year-old right-hander can become a free agent after the World Series.

Due to changes in baseball's new collective bargaining agreement, the Angels will not receive draft-pick compensation if Greinke leaves as a free agent next winter. The pitcher didn't rule out re-signing with Milwaukee.

"I am going to miss my time here. It was a lot of fun," he said. "We have a great group of guys. We really liked each other and got along."

Greinke last pitched on Tuesday, limiting the Philadelphia Phillies to one run in seven innings. He also homered off Cliff Lee.

Angels right fielder Torii Hunter called the move "awesome."

"Having Zack Greinke over here, you can't beat it. He's one of the elite pitchers in the game," Hunter said. "This is the best pitching staff I've been a part of in my career."

Greinke was scheduled to pitch Sunday for the Brewers. Instead, he'll start for the Angels against Tampa Bay.

Milwaukee obtained Greinke from the Kansas City Royals before the 2011 season. He helped the Brewers win the NL Central and reach the league championship series, but Milwaukee (44-54) has slumped to fourth place this year after free-agent slugger Prince Fielder left for Detroit last offseason.

Melvin said trading Greinke was a difficult decision.

"I am very fond of Zack, not only as a player but as a person. He is one of my favorite players that I've ever been associated with. It makes it a little bit tougher," the GM explained. "We had to make a decision to turn the page. These three players are players we feel good about. Zack is going to be a great addition for the Angels and help them out. We appreciate everything he did for us. He did all we can ask of him."

But with Greinke in position to seek contract offers in excess of $100 million next winter, the Brewers decided to get what they could for him.

"It's not something I hoped to do at this time of the year," Melvin said. "I had hoped to be in a position to maybe acquire a player. That's the way the game goes sometimes."

Greinke is 85-76 with a 3.79 ERA in nine major league seasons. Early in his career with Kansas City, he walked away from baseball for a while because of social anxiety disorder, a condition he has learned to handle. But some question whether he'd be a comfortable fit in a large media market.

"We're not in the mode right now of discussing 2013 and beyond," Dipoto said. "We're going to let Zack come in and settle in with the Angels. I think he wants to be here. He's excited about the move and excited about coming here and playing with a team that's in a position like we are."

The 22-year-old Segura, considered one of the best prospects in the Angels' system, was called up to the big leagues Tuesday and went 0 for 3 with two strikeouts against the Royals. He was batting .294 with seven homers and 33 stolen bases at Double-A Arkansas, where Hellweg and Pena were among his teammates.

The 6-foot-9 Hellweg was 5-10 with a 3.38 ERA in 21 starts for Arkansas. Pena was 6-6 with a 2.99 ERA in 19 starts, and his 111 strikeouts were tied for second in the Texas League.

Baseball America ranked Hellweg as the Angels' fourth-best prospect going into this season. Pena was rated ninth. Both pitchers are 23.

All three new acquisitions for the Brewers are headed to Double-A Huntsville.

"We went into this without presuming that we were going to make any moves," Dipoto said. "But when you're given the opportunity to acquire a player like that, you're going to go a little over and beyond. It was going to be pretty fierce competition to gain his services. We were aggressive and made the deal today with players, quite frankly, that are painful to lose."

NOTES: The Angels also placed SS Erick Aybar on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 22, because of a broken big toe on his right foot. INF Andrew Romine was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake and OF Vernon Wells, sidelined since May 21 with a torn ligament in his right thumb that required surgery, was activated from the DL.
